The 4 secrets of practice recordings
"You have 30 minutes left."
Four hours before the live broadcast at 2 PM, a producer is heading to the SNSD waiting room with fast steps in order to inform them that they have 30 minutes left before their practice recording. Upon hearing that, SNSD busily begins to prepare with their hair and make up staff members.
With their newest track, 'Run Devil Run,' SNSD entered their practice recording on the 19th at 2:30 PM at Seoul's KBS hall.
Every week, so many artists participate in music programs but the teams that are actually able to do a practice recording only amount to 4 or 5. Why are there practice recordings and what exactly determines who gets to do it?
First of all, practice recordings give a breath of oxygen for the live music programs that often struggle with time. An associate of Core Contents Media, the agency for SG Wannabe and T-ara, stated in a phone interview with Money Today Star News, "The show programs of our country are extremely lacking in actual preparation time. Because of that, the actual stage transitions are kept very simple and the order of the artists are lined up in a way that is most comfortable for the producers."
Singers with comeback stages are given first priority for practice recordings. Normal music broadcasts have an average of 4 or 5 teams that are chosen but they are usually all comeback stages.
The same associate stated, "The comeback singer's stage is given first priority because of the special preparations that go into it. There are times where the practice recordings are given to the only the top stars. To put it simply, the stars must have a certain level of popularity in order to be given the chance for a practice recording."
Of course, M.net's M Countdown gives the majority of their singers the chance for a practice recording because of the large amount of participating singers. During the live broadcasts, the MC and singers can also be found in the waiting rooms doing interviews.
The lineup is also determined by the singers' schedules, such as other CF recordings, radio appearances, and etc.
An associate of 2AM stated, "On the 18th, we did a practice recording at 10 AM, and on the 25th, at 9 AM. It's such an early time that the singers' voices and bodies aren't properly warmed up yet. However, we must prepare according to the producers' requests."
He went on to state, "Because of this, 2AM's hair and make up team arrive at their dorms in the early morning in order to complete their preparations before they head to the recording hall."
SBS Inkigayo's producer revealed, "Practice recordings are usually determined by an agreement with the singer, but it's really just up to the PD's discretion."
