[NEWS] Kim Yu-na Fails to Defend Title !

Olympic champion Kim Yu-na failed to defend her world title, as she took a silver medal at the World Figure Skating Championships in Turin, Italy Sunday (KST).

The 19-year-old scored 130.49 points in the free skating for an overall of 190.79. She wound up seventh with 60.30 in the short program Saturday after under-rotating a triple flip and missing a layback spin.

Mao Asada of Japan claimed her second world championship title with 197.58 and Finnish Laura Lepisto placed third on 178.62.

Japanese Miki Ando finished fourth and short-program leader Mirai Nagasu of the United States dropped to seventh.

Kim, who looked to rebound from her disastrous performance in the short program, landed her first four jumps cleanly, but she fell on a salchow jump and botched a double axel before wrapping up her routine.

Kwak Min-jung finished 22nd in her first appearance of the World Championships.

The 16-year-old, who racked up 47.46 points in the short, earned 73.01 in the free skate segment for 120.47 total.

[NEWS] Yuna kim doesn't finish first?

Defending world champion Kim Yu-na struggled in her title defense.

The 19-year-old South Korean scored her third career-worst 60.30 points to finish seventh in the women's short program of the World Figure Skating Championships in Turin, Italy on Saturday morning (KST).

She had 58.32 and 59.85 points in the Grand Prix and World Championships, respectively, in the 2007-08 season.

In addition, it was the first time for the three-time World Grand Prix Final winner not to make the top five in the event.

American Mirai Nagasu led the pack with 70.40 points to beat Olympic silver medalist Mao Asada of Japan by 2.32. Laura Lepisto of Finland was third place on 64.30.

The Olympic champion opened her routine with a solid triple lutz-triple toe loop combination, but she under-rotated her triple flip and missed a layback spin before her spiral sequence was downgraded.

Kim's compatriot Kwak Min-jung scored 47.46 points to finish 23rd and qualify for the free skating.

The 16-year-old, who placed 13th at the Vancouver Winter Olympics last month, failed to land a triple lutz-double toe loop combination.

The free skating is scheduled for Saturday night.

[NEWS] Kim Yu-na not a superhuman after all? Falls behind at university !

Olympic figure skating champion Kim Yu-na may be formidable on the ice, but she is in trouble academically. A second-year student in physical education at Korea University, she received two Fs last year and is reportedly determined to pay more attention to her academic endeavors this year.

Kim barely made it to class last year. Although Korea University runs special morning curriculum for athletes, Kim mostly trains and competes overseas, so it was almost impossible for her to attend.

It seems she was also unable to complete assessed assignments or turn in reports replacing exams on time.
Apart from attendance, it would be difficult for the university not to give her failing grades when there is so little they can use to evaluate her performance.

As an athlete in the national team, Kim can submit training plans to make up for attendance. In the second semester last year, Kim sent emails to the professors of the classes she registered and sought their understanding for being unable to attend classes. As for tests, she is required to replace them with written assignments. While she is abroad, she can submit them via email, and when she is in Korea, she visits the university to hand them in herself.

Kim needs to take 140 credits in order to graduate, and it seems unlikely that she will be able to graduate in the normal four years, as that requires her to take 18 to 20 credits a semester. From next year, Kim will be able to take classes at a partner university of Korea University in Toronto and transfer the credits.

[News] Kim Yu Na to promote Seoul in documentary, 2NE1 to be featured

Kim Yu-na, who won the country's first Olympic figure skating gold in Vancouver last week with a near-perfect record-setting performance, will appear in a documentary to promote Seoul around the world.

Seoul Metropolitan Government said yesterday that
the 60-minute documentary, titled "Seoul Spirit," will be aired by the Discovery Channel in about 20 Southeast Asian countries on March 19.

Using Seoul as a backdrop, the documentary will show how the 19-year-old Kim grew up to reach the top of figure skating. It will also showcase a variety of tourist attractions in Seoul, including the Han River and Gwanghwamun Square.
The documentary, which the city spent a year planning and producing, will also highlight "woman power" in Korea, featuring interviews with Korea's first astronaut Yi So-yeon and popular girl group 2NE1.

"Seoul Spirit" is the third installment of the documentary series, called "Hip Korea-Seoul," which Seoul City and Discovery Channel jointly planned and organized to promote the Korean capital.

The first two installments, featuring Korean stars Rain and Lee Byung-hyun, were aired last year in 20 Asian countries, including Japan.
The city seeks to air Kim's documentary in China and countries in Europe and America as well to promote the attractive aspects of Seoul, which was designated in 2007 as the 2010 World Design Capital by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design.

"We anticipate that the documentary will grab the attention of people around the world as Kim won gold at the Vancouver Olympics. We will actively seek to promote the good image of Seoul around the world by capitalizing on it," said Yoon Young-seok, chief of the city's global marketing division.

Spurring publicity efforts, the city dramatically ramped up its annual marketing budget to 40.1 billion won ($35.05 million) in 2008, a substantial leap from 5.3 billion won in the previous year. Last year, the budget was at 34.1 billion won and has been set at 34.1 billion won for this year.

[NEWS] Japanese Site Hacked over Yu-na Attacks!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
An army of Korean netizens apparently attacked the Japanese Internet forum 2ch for their anti-Korean postings, including those targeting Korea's Olympic gold-medal-winning figure skater Kim Yu-na, causing the site to shut down on Monday.

The attacks began at 1 p.m. on Monday, Korea's Independence Day, which marked Korea's movement against Japanese colonial rule 91 years ago.

Login attempts were unsuccessful in the afternoon.

About 30 out of 33 posting boards were paralyzed by 1:30 p.m.

Online security officials estimated that more than 10,000 Korean netizens participated in hacking into the site.

The attacks were triggered by comments praising Russians for the killing of a Korean student in Moscow.

Some postings claimed that the killing was not racially motivated and Russians were doing "good deeds" after the event occurred.

2ch saw postings claiming that Kim Yu-na won the gold medal in the Vancouver Olympics thanks to judges bribed by Korea. Such anti-Yu-na comments increased when Japan's Mao Asada lost to Kim and had to settle for a silver medal.
