[news] Mnet to host free K-pop concert in Bangkok next week

Cable music channel Mnet will be hosting a free concert in Thailand next week starring over a dozen K-pop groups, according to a press release by the broadcaster on Thursday.

Mnet announced it will hold the "ShowKing M in Bangkok" at 7 p.m. on April 6 where a total of 18 different artists, including 2AM, Brown Eyed Girls, Choshinsung, CNBLUE, Kara, Kim Tae-woo, MBLAQ, SG Wannabe, Son Ho-young, T-ara and U-Kiss, have been set to perform.

Boy band 2PM members Junsu and Wooyoung have been chosen as emcees for the event.

"Thailand is currently the advance guard for spreading Korean pop music," said the show's chief producer Kim Dong-joon. "Many Korean singers will be able to promote themsevles overseas from this performance and largely contribute in raising the popularity of the local pop music, the Korean Wave."

Korean music industry officials also explained that there are many Korean singers who will "take advantage of such big, local music show to break into overseas markets."

The free concert, which will take place at Thailand's Rajamangala National Stadium, was organized by media business company AMADAS and will be broadcast jointly by Thai terrestrial network MCOT and Korea's Mnet.

A press conference regarding the show will be held April 5 with the concert itself set to air on Mnet two weeks later.

Well, I guess Kara is dominating the charts with their song Lupin. By the way, in Kara's performance in March 6 in Music Core, Seung Yeon tripped on stage. It's good she had fast reactions, because her face would have hitten the floor. Anyways, great job to Seung Yeon for her professionalism!

For next week, I think there will be new additions. For instance, MC Mong & Seo In Young (ex Jewelry) has released Bubble Love; B2ST made their comeback with Shock; the fastest rapper in Korea, Outsider, also has a new song; and ballad group December also has a new song!

[News] SM Entertainment discontinues supply of music content to Mnet.com

SM Entertainment has recently announced that they will not be providing Mnet with its music source in the future.

There was an announcement posted on SM Entertainment official homepage on 2nd March with the title “Official stand regarding discontinuation of music source provision to Mnet”

In the announcement it was stated, “It has been confirmed that Mnet, with whom we have been discussing of long-term music source provision early this year, has violated the contract with our company. They were found with unauthorised use of SM contents on the ASP sites under Mnet.com and Mnet Media.”

It was added, “That was also no notice or explanation from Mnet about this. All this while, SM has been providing its contents to Mnet Media based on mutual trust. With that it will be hard to continue the business dealings which is based on good faith, and we have decided to give up on the contract with Mnet Media.” explaining the reason why songs by SM singers will not accessible via Mnet.com.

In fact, if one is to click on the song ‘Oh!’ by So Nyeo Shi Dae currently up #1 on Mnet realtime chart, a notice will pop up saying “We are currently in the midst of consulting on contract to using this music source. We will work hard to resume the service.”

Last thursday, Mnet kicked of their brand new M! countdown with 8 MC's and special stages from artists.

Ahead of the broadcast, mnet announced that they will be having 8 MC's for the show instead of the typical 3 MC's for a long period. The 8 MC's will have a rotation of MC-ing every thursday.

With an overload of maleness, since all the MC's are guys, it didnt bother fans instead made them giggle, who wouldn't? I know i did!

So, check out the backstage photo's with translations! There's lee joon happily eating fruits and Kiwi, the whole gang laughing together and looks like new found friendships are going to be formed in this show.

[news] CN Blue performs with live instruments for the first time on a music show!

I know its kinda late since this was yesterday's event but i still want to emphasize it, so here we go.

Ever since CN blue debuted, their performances on music bank, music core and inkigayo were only live on vocals and used audio for the instruments.

This got a lot of fans disappointed because they want to see the real talent of CN Blue with musical instruments instead of their instruments being just decorations during music shows.

Although its disappointing, the music shows have their own reasons which are, for better sounding performance, since it is a closed studio, the live band may get too loud or noisy; the music shows want perfect audio background for easy performance, etc.

But on the comeback episode of M!countdown at Mnet, CN Blue was able to perform live not only with vocals but with their live band instruments! For the first time in music shows they were able to perform and no more instrument decorations.

They performed with a more rock version last thursday compared to their usual "Im a loner" version.

You can sense the true rock bank within CN Blue with the live instruments and their talents have been finally put to use.

2AM had a special stage where they interpreted some of the most popular idol groups' songs in their own ways and sang them.

On Feb. 18th, 2AM sang a medley of songs on a newly created segment, B's Shop, which is part of Mnet's M Countdown.

Jo Kwon sang 2PM's "10 Points out of 10," Jinwoon sang 2NE1's "Fire," Changmin sang Big Bang's "Lies," and Seulong sang BEG's "Abracadabra."

B's Shop is a new segment in which Bang Si Hyuk picks a group and recreates some songs based on the group's personalities and strengths. 2AM, currently in their Golden Age with "I Can't Let You Go Even If I Die," a track produced by Bang Si Hyuk, was chosen first.

At the same time, the episode of M Countdown that aired on the 18th is trying out a new idea in which they have 8 MCs. 2PM's NicKhun, Junho, Chansung, 2AM's Jo Kwon, Jinwoon, C.N.Blue's Kang Min Hyuk, and MBLAQ's Lee Jun and G.O. are part of the new team. These 8 will be divided into groups of 3-4 and take turns being the MC.

[news] Mnet to kick off the new year with Taegoon documentary / Taegoon in an-an magazine next month

On January 14, 2009, solo artist Taegoon made his debut with Call Me, calling the attention of many with his hot music video that starred TVXQ's Jaejoong and actress Park Shin Hye. Since then, Taegoon has released three albums, charmed his way into many fans' hearts both in Korea and overseas, and been dubbed the "2nd Rain" for his dance skills.

A year and two days after Taegoon's debut, Mnet will be airing My Name is Taegoon, a feature documentary with interviews, MVs, live performances from his performance at Sanrio Puroland (Japan) and other exclusive footage from Taegoon's career over 2009. The documentary trilogy will be broadcast on Friday's over a three-week period on on January 16, January 23 and January 30.

[news] The unfortunate story behind Mnet and SM Entertainment

Last night's MAMA, hosted by Mnet, was certainly a feast for numerous Kpop fans out there. However, as enjoyable as it was, the event was (and still is) swamped with layers of controversy, with SM Entertainment's boycott being the eye of the storm. Mnet and SME appear to be mortal enemies, but many still remember the fact that they used to be very friendly with each other. Exactly what made them become such bitter adversaries? Let's examine the dispute between Mnet and SME.

What exactly is Mnet?

Mnet is a media company owned by CJ Media which focuses on music, media, entertainment and web content business. CJ Media is a part of CJ, a South Korean conglomerate that is one of the top five largest companies in the country. Mnet is involved in pretty much every aspect of the entertainment industry, ranging from album production, distribution, sales, management, television broadcasting, online media and many other businesses. With these expansion, Mnet has become a giant in music industry, with market share of 44% in album sales and over 20% in online music sales.

Mnet and CJ are also shareholders in major entertainment companies DSP Entertainment and YG Entertainment. Although they own no more than 20% of shares from each company, the fact that CJ is a conglomerate means the aforementioned companies are now affiliates of CJ. Smaller entertainment companies with famous names such as Shinwha, Kim Dong Ryul and Wheesung are "affiliates" of CJ as well. Similarly, 30% of JYP Entertainment is held by SK, another conglomerate that is one of top 5 largest companies in Korea, making JYP a faction with as much support as Mnet has.

How has SME and Mnet's relationship developed over the years?

Before 2008, SME and Mnet were quite friendly. MKMF, now known as MAMA, featured numerous artists from SME which were given many awards. However, during 2008, Mnet proposed to SME that they would like to be the distributor of music produced by SME; in return, Mnet would receive certain percentage of profit from the sales. Mnet had already been distributing music of JYP, DSP and YG, and with the right to distribute SME's music they would become undisputed leader in the industry. SME refused the offer as they had the ability to distribute their own music and did not feel the need to pay Mnet for a job that they could do themselves. Mnet undoubtedly held a grudge against SME for obstructing their dominance of the industry, and the friendship ended there.

CJ has also attempted hostile takeover of SME but failed. If they had been successful, CJ would have acquired control of Korean entertainment industry. These facts have not been well-publicized, until recent controversy involving SME and MAMA have brought the public's attention to the relationship between the two parties. With SNSD's Gee and MAMA, we have now witnessed the nature of their relationship.

How does MAMA play into this tense relationship between SME and Mnet?

One of the biggest controversies brought on by MAMA was the fact that the three members of TVXQ, Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu, made their appearance for acceptance of Best Representative of Asia Award. Although some may argue that SME's outrage was uncalled for, and that the trio is free to do whatever they want, the choice to make an appearance at an Mnet event was deliberate and could not have been a spontaneous, wanton decision.

So what's the significance behind TVXQ's appearance?

Many have suspected that the three members were able to act in such bold manner against SME in recent months because they were being supported by an organization more powerful than SME. With their unabashed appearance at MAMA, it now appears that Mnet and CJ might be the ones that have the three members' back. It is very possible that CJ and Mnet are backing the three members in order to win their fight against SME for dominance in the industry. If that is so, then TVXQ members have become mere pawns in a battle between two corporations.

SME, a company now known for its oppressive, big-corporate attitude towards its artists, is ironically under attack from one of the largest corporations in Korea. Both companies are profit-motivated organizations that are pursuing whatever action that generates more profit, so there is no good or bad in a situation like this. What is unfortunate, however, is that the artists have become the victims in this corporate power struggle. TVXQ, SNSD, and SHINee are all victims in this dispute between SME and CJ/Mnet; MAMA could merely have been the beginning of penance for these artists.

Reporter: Felt your popularity recently?
Jung Yong Hwa: I was recognized by the students when I was in a restaurant. The elder people do not know me. But many students recognize me.

Reporter: In real life, is there any difference between Jung Yong Hwa and Kang Shin Woo?
Jung Yong Hwa: Kang Shin Woo is a very mature and careful man. In fact, in real life, I’m usually a naughty guy and fond of making jokes.

Reporter: How do you look at your nickname given by your fans?
Jung Yong Hwa: Shin Woo is a very good role in the drama. So people called me “Towel Guy”. I am fine with it. (Nickname was given as he covered Go Mi Nam with a towel in the man shower room)

Reporter: What do you like most about yourself?
Jung Yong Hwa: I’m not a double eyelid person but my eyes are relatively big, so I like and have confident in my eyes. (Having a embarrassed smile after saying that)

Reporter: What kind of role do you like to act in future?
Jung Yong Hwa: If there is a chance, I like to act as a bad guy role. (After finishing say that, he pulled up his collar and give a very bad expression. However still there is still room for improvement. ^^ He laughed out immediately and said sorry)

[Picture] MBLAQ's hot debut at Mnet

MBLAQ finally made its debut last 15th of October with their song "oh yeah" from their first mini album "just BLAQ". Even before they debuted they were already hot topic among fans especially since Rain is producing them, high expectations were set and if you ask me they are meeting those expectations quite fairly.

Their debut performance was indeed worth the wait, they performed and danced on sync, their vocals were amazing, they had stage presence and most of all they were hot. They sizzled and owned the stage and won the hearts of the many fan girls out there. Fans have been waiting for this, its been girls groups after next for the past few months. [news] T-ara Nab Delicious CF Deal

You know what they say, an apple a day…..lands you a 3,000,000,000 Won guarantee revenue/contract to promote apples.

It was bound to happen, especially after the success of their new hit song, “TTL (Time to Love)”; T-ara signed a cozy deal to be the official commercial endorsers of Nonghyup Apple in Korea.

The group recorded an “Apple Song” for the CF, and of course, what good would the song and the CF be without a MV to market it?

The deal is apparently the most impressive endorsement for a rookie girl group so far – which means these ladies finally beat 2NE1 at something.
