JoongAng daily published an interesting English article about tattoos on March 16: Fighting for art on a natural canvas.

As you may be aware, getting tattoos in parlors is currently illegal in Korea, where they’re considered a medical procedure that should only be done by doctors. The article outlines the efforts of the Korean Tattoo Association to regulate tattooing in Korea. The association was founded last year, after a revision to medical laws that would make tattoos legal was proposed by the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs. The revision was scrapped and the tattooist who appealed to the Constitutional Court lost the case, but it inspired Lee Rang, another tattoo artist, to create the KTA.

The article mentions G-Dragon by name, but of course it’s an issue that also affects many other YG artists – the four members of 1TYM, Se7en, Hyun Suk, Eun Joo, Perry, Skull, Kush, Masta Wu and DM all have tattoos. The negative way in which body art is perceived in Korea has forced some of them to hide their tattoos and piercings (ear piercings too, way back in the day!) when they appeared on certain networks.

[news] Big Bang’s CF partner ‘Lollipop girl’ to be revealed on Mnet on 22nd March

It has been known that Big Big Bang ‘Lollipop Girl’ will be revealed through Mnet on 22nd March.

There will be a large scale event ‘Lollipop Girl Selection Project’ jointly organised by LG, CYON and Mnet where the Lollipop girl will be selected to be Big Bang members’ partner for the CF as well as the chance to do the photoshoot filming with Big Bang this summer. The winners will also be awarded 1million KRW each.

With that, the application for the selection was held online from 10th February till 2nd March on CYON homepage. About 10K participates signed up.

And 12 final participants were chosen after looking at their dance, singing and personal talents. The 12 finalists will be revealed through Mnet on 22nd March.
The show will be aired on 22nd March at 7pm with Yoo SaeYoon as the MC.

[news] Prosecution will not book G-Dragon

The prosecution suspended its investigation of obscenity charges against pop singer G-Dragon on Tuesday.

Prosecutors said it decided to suspend its plan to indict the singer, who had been accused of simulating sex on stage with a female dancer during a concert in December.

Criticism from netizens was especially severe because the audience was made up mostly of pre-teens.

After the show, the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs filed a complaint against the singer and his management agency on charges of obscenity.

The prosecution said it had made its decision because the singer had only acted in accordance with the management agency's plans, and that the controversial scene made up just two minutes of the two-hour performance.

* YG contacted Flo Rida and Flo Rida is featuring in G-Dragon's 'Heartbreaker' (i.e. he laid down a rap for a new version of the song)>. This featured version of the song will be released somewhere around the end of March in G-Dragon's concert live album. Also, the money will be donated to charity.
* G-Dragon's concert 'SHINE A LIGHT' DVD will be released in April in two versions. No-edit version and the 19 and younger version.
* In the first half of the year Se7en, Taeyang, Gummy and 2NE1 are planning to release albums and in the last half Big Bang, 2NE1, TOP, Daesung and Seungri will be active. Perry's back from the States. They have also recruited five more producers.

[News] Fair Trade Committee Investigating All Celebrities In SM

The Fair Trade Committee (FTC) has launched an investigation regarding all the celebrities associated with SM Entertainment (SM) regarding the accordance of their contracts to the FTC's regulations and many fear that a 'Second TVXQ dispute' will arise.

According to the office of Jo Mun Hwan (member of the Grand National Party). the FTC has instigated an investigation of the contracts of 53 artistes of SM including Girls Generation, Super Junior and TVXQ, whose three members (Xiah Junsu, Micky Yoochun, YoungWoong Jaejoong) are locked in a legal dispute with the agency.

According to the written answer submitted to the office of Jo Mun Hwan by the FTC, the reason the TVXQ dispute is taking so long to be handled is because the FTC is currently investigating the contracts of all the SM artistes.

However, the FTC did not state a concrete finish date when it stated, "This dispute has not been completely processed because the Fair Trade Committee is currently investigating to see if the contracts of all the artistes of SM Entertainment are not in accordance with the regulations that have been set." and "We will carefully examine all relevant documents and process this case as soon as possible.

SM Entertainment, one of Korea's top entertainment agencies, has been plagued by misfortune the past year with three members of TVXQ and Super Junior's Hangeng filing lawsuits for unlawful contracts. The three members of TVXQ and Hangeng both gave reasons of a 13 year contract and unlawful income division for the legal disputes.

SM is not the only agency with problems regarding unlawful contracts of celebrities. Congressman Jo criticized the problems with unlawful contracts of celebrities last December at the Fair Trade Committee's parliamentary inspection of the administration, and called for the investigation of 407 agencies including large agencies such as SM Entertainment. However, it was found that only 11 agencies have corrected their contracts till the end of January, one month past the due date of the inspection.

Before this, in an inspection of 20 agencies including YG Entertainment and Star Empire in April~May of last year, it was found that 230 celebrities of 19 agencies all had unlawful clauses in their contracts.

Not only were there clauses regarding free of charge appearances at agency-run events, there were numerous clauses regarding notification of location, impossibility of retiring and other privacy related clauses that clearly violated human rights.

Director Lee Soo Man, who is also the creator of SM Entertainment, gave up his administrative powers on February 25th and stated that he would stay the major shareholder and a producer. This, all well as the inspection being held by the FTC, may put SM Entertainment in a dilemma.

This inspection from the FTC may mean a new chapter for large entertainment agencies such as SM as well as JYP Entertainment, that is caught up in the 'Jaebeom incident', in order to protect the rights of the 'powerless' celebrities. It may also eliminate the deeply rooted 'slave contract' from the Korean entertainment industry once and for all.

[News] YG, “Se7en will be coming back with new music”

What kind of music will singer Se7en comeback with this earlier half of the year?

This will be Se7en’s comeback after being away from the Kpop scene for a long time when he started preparations for his American debut in 2006, and his comeback album will be released in around May-June.

YG Entertainment representative Yang HyunSeok has also gave the promise, “He will not be doing the usual style but will be back showing a new image and with new music.”

A YG rep said on 4th March, “In order to present good music, we are currently workig on the recordings works after receiving many songs from many composers.”

Of course when asked about the musicians who will participate in this new album, the rep did not reveal much for now. But it was stated, “We are anticipating the album because Se7en will be coming back with new music in this earlier half of the year where other singers like Lee Hyori and Son DamBi are also having their comeback.”

[news] Big Bang's "GARA GARA GO!!" MV nominated as BEST Choreography MV of 2009!

Space Shower Music Video Awards held by Space Shower TV will be held again this year. Like last year, the emphasis of the MVAs will be done through the internet and connected booklets. 70 productions have been nominated in 14 categories from the music videos released in 2009, with each category containing an award, such as the “BEST YOUR CHOICE,” which is selected through viewer polling; “BEST VIDEO OF THE YEAR,” which is chosen from all of the videos combined; and the “BEST ARTIST” award, which is chosen from the artist who produced the year’s most outstanding music video.

Beginning February 14th, the nominees will be announced through Space Shower’s “MVA Nomination” program. All awards and winners will be announced in a special program airing March 22nd.

Big Bang’s Japanese hit “Gara Gara GO!” has been nominated as the ‘Best Choreography Video’ along with 5 other Japanese artists such as BoA, RIP SLYME, Ikimono Gakari and Miura Daichi. The choreography for Big Bang’s “Gara Garo GO!” was made by Shaun Evaristo and Taeyang.

For the past 20 years or more, Japan has successfully sold its superinfectious brand of pop music in other Asian markets. Now the South Koreans want to follow suit. The vocalist Rain - among the TIME 100 in 2006 - remains the international face of K-pop, but a host of other artists are eager to follow in his wake. Their appeal to Western audiences remains niche - Rain himself has struggled to make an impression in the U.S., despite a ton of MTV appearances and onstage backup from the likes of Omarion and Diddy. That leaves Japan as the prime foreign market for the talented, preening young acts that South Korea produces by the score.

The most promising of these is Big Bang, a domestically successful five-man hip-hop group formed through a Making the Band – style reality show in 2006. A Japanese-language mini-album (With U) enjoyed some success in 2008. Big Bang now hope their debut full-length Japanese-language release - having entered Japan’s charts at No. 3 - will deliver the coup de grace. The good looks of the creators certainly won’t harm the disc’s chances.

A self-titled affair, Bigbang serves up fresh tracks and reworkings of the group’s old Korean singles. The tasty production, dance-pop beats, fluid raps and great vocal harmonies comprise an expertly fashioned example of globalized R&B. Tracks like “My Heaven” (a collaboration with top Japanese DJ Daishi Dance) and “Love Club” have plenty of dance-floor appeal. As for swoon factor, well, their track “Let Me Hear Your Voice” has been selected as the theme for the new Tokyo Broadcasting System romantic comedy Ohitorisama. If your work is popping up on Friday-night prime-time drama, total domination can’t be that far behind.

[news] GD 15-Part Interview Pt.12- “My solo album was a gamble”

Kwon Jiyong’s ‘Heartbreaker’ saw the light of this world on August 18, 2009. This day also happened to be G-Dragon’s birthday.

”It was actually scheduled to be out in April, but I didn’t like it. I didn’t feel like a piece of work that I’d been looking forward to for ten years; there was just something missing. I didn’t know how long it would be til my turn to go solo came again.. That one album was a gamble for me.”

During the preparation of his solo album, Big Bang started Japanese promotions. During the months they were active there, if there was nothing on G-Dragon’s schedule for even a single day, he would fly back to Korea to work on the album and fly back at night. While the other members felt the freedom of being able to shop and have fun without being watched or followed, G-Dragon was out of his mind looking for performance outfits.

”Writing songs, buying performance outfits, being at meetings via webcam..I think my album was the only thing I was thinking about for 24 hours a day. I wanted to make an album that I had contributed to as much as possible. I wanted people to think not just that it’s been ‘made’, but ‘Kwon Jiyong made this’. I even went a little over the top by concerning over things like font, colour and decoration. I wanted to release an album that seemed more like a wrapped up gift than a normal, standard CD. So that people can open the case like a present and anticipate what might be inside, even if its not expensive. I think the album designers might’ve thought I was a big weird; I would call in the middle of the night whenever I got a new idea. (laughs)”

He became totally immersed in working on his album.

”Heartbreaker is about being hurt by love. To express that my heart had been crushed, I made all the dancers wear my mask and do different dances. It was to show different emotions coming out of the same face.”

He experienced a lot of differences to when he was making an album with the other members. He had to fill in every aspect himself, letting him mature more as an artist and realise how valuable the other members really were.

”I learnt so much from making my album. I met with a lot of people from different fields. It was also my turn to play the ‘Cutesy’ part that Daesung and Seungri usually take responsibility for. But I had to show a serious side to the higher ups. Anyhow, I was able to mingle with a lot of different people and learnt more interpersonal skills.”

When an artist releases an album, they usually put all their effort into promoting it. However promotion of G-Dragon’s album through newspapers and TV stations was minimal as YG Entertainment considers performances more important than promotions.

”I was really worried because we had barely promoted. Then I found out about something called ‘Me2day’. It’s like a blog. President Yang told me ‘This is the one way we have chosen to promote. You can do your own promoting.’ He’s always like that. He’ll open the road for us bit by bit and we have to find our own way through it. Anyway, I started showing fans bits and pieces like an outfit for a music video and a strand of my newly dyed hair. I wanted to be the one to show them my music first before any music portal sites so I even gave them 30 second snippets of a few songs. I kept thinking things like ‘If they check for updates before they go to bed and there has been an update, they’d be happy that they can talk about it the next day at school, right?’ I think it was a heart-fluttering period for both me and the fans.”

Thanks to G-Dragon, Me2day also received huge popularity. The site that had only had tens of thousands of members suddenly had hundreds of thousands. Again, G-Dragon started receiving attention from a huge number of people but just as he felt like he was starting to communicate with his fans, he was accused of plagiarism. This was just one day before the release of his album.

Lyna : For YG Family fans, I’m sure they are very interested to know something about them. We already know that some of Big Bang, 2NE1 and other YG artists know how to speak English. I read your previous blog post in MySpace about Big Bang and wondered if your first impression about them is still the same.

G-Dragon: Leader.

Stylish, motivator, confidence, fearless. I like g-dragon! I always find an item of clothing that I like each time I see him. One day it’s his hat and another it’s his top but most of the time it’s the way he wears it. Plus, he can dance. I think I like his tats most though since I am a supporter of ink myself.

Lyna : What do you really like about G-Dragon besides his stuffs, tattoos and the fact that he can dance?

Aimee : I like GD’s attitude

Aimee : From what I’ve seen I like how involved he is in his music

Lyna : Yes… I love his style also… It puts you on the edge

Aimee: TY also participates heavily during rehearsal and focuses on perfection.

Aimee : I Like TY style. It’s very guyish

Lyna : How come you said that G-Dragon is fearless? In what sense? Is he not afraid of anything?

Aimee: I feel he is fearless when I think about all the controversy surrounding him.

Aimee : he’s not afraid to try something new or go against the grain

Lyna : I know what you mean…

T.O.P.: Handsome.

Tall, awkward, FUNNY yet quiet. Sticks to his diet & eats a lot of fruits. Although he’s not the best dancer or is this ability natural to him, I admire his hard work and determination. He knows when he’s behind and he reviews the steps over and over again for muscle memory…I admire that. So when he gets it right-I praises him.

Lyna : I really agree with you that he’s handsome, tall and awkward. (I’m being biased eh? I guess I’m too obvious.*blush*) But, what’s with “Funny yet Quiet”? I can’t imagine how a quiet guy can be funny…

Aimee: He’s more respectful than quiet. Also I speak English which is a set back and I’m not around him often

Aimee: he’s funny cause I see it when he talks and everyone laughs

Aimee: his facials and body language makes me laugh. Like a comedian

Lyna : ow.. I see… He usually does gags in the group.. I understand… the language barrier…

Aimee : he’s pretty animated and his voice is deep.

Lyna : really… I hope to witness it someday

Lyna :yeah… Really different… Very masculine… LOL

Aimee: but he talks to me in English whenever we see each other

Lyna : I also notice that TOP lacks some dancing skills and he really is trying very hard to cope up with the dance moves. Anything new about him? Since you’ve seen his collection of Bear Bricks, Can you describe it? Most of us are clueless about it.

Aimee : there’s many. Most of them are big. They sit on white shelves and cover one wall. Top is getting better in dancing. I can see it. He looks comfortable on stage. You can see he’s having fun.

Lyna : Yeah… esp. in Ora Ora Yeah..though we haven’t seen it yet.. just from behind the scenes

Lyna : Why do I feel jealous? Hehehe… So, ‘Macho’, dog of Kush is ‘Boss’ brother?

Aimee: yup!

Aimee :Boss is awesome I saw him as a baby then a year later and his size matches his big heart.

Aimee: They say “a dog is a man’s bestfriend” and I believe Boss is Tae Yang’s bestfriend!

Lyna : There has been news lately about Taeyang wanting to have a girlfriend. Is there anyone whom you’d like to recommend to be his gf? And, why?

Aimee : no I don’t have anyone in mind

Aimee: He’s wanted a girlfriend but he’s very particular which is important..

Lyna : particular? In what way?

Aimee : He deserves a great person

Lyna : yeah… I agree.

Aimee: I think I would want someone great for him too. He has a lot of love to give. As everyone knows, he has a lot on his mind and I think he needs a girl who can take him away from work and listen to what he has to say.

Lyna : Do you know anyone in particular whom he likes…

Aimee : No he hasn’t expressed that with me.

Lyna : okay… =)

Aimee: He’s told me what he likes and looks for in a girl though. I consider him my closest friend in Korea. Him, Jay, and Teddy.

Aimee : I want to be a friend he can confide in and trust but language gets in the way. He feels the same way so it’s mutual.

Lyna : you’re very lucky… I mean… you’re the envy of all his fans.. Including me LOL

Aimee : he’s a great guy but so quiet and thinks and keeps everything to himself

Aimee: I want to get it out!

Seungri: Dancer.

Eager, willing, student, LOVES dance! He researches on youtube whenever he gets the chance. He knows his material, studies it, and applies it. He makes it a point to call us when Shaun’s in town and learn choreography even if it’s one on one. He’s focused on doing meaningful songs with quality choreography. I admire that! Plus, he has an iPod with a great selection of music in really cute font. LOL!

Lyna : Since Seungri has an iPod, do you know what his favorite songs are?

Aimee: No but he listens to everything

Aimee: From what I know, Big Bang is on top of all the new music that comes out

Lyna : Yeah.. You’re right

Daesung: RUM TUM!

LOL…his stage name/character in the musical ‘cats’. I wish I had more time with him but he barely had time to come. Maybe two or three rehearsals total he attended. How hard is that? I wish Shaun and I had some time to go watch his musical in fact but we were leaving a few days later and never had the chance. I’m a big fan of his voice and it works well for Korean folk songs. He is soooo funny, makes the craziest facials (him and TOP) yet is also the quietest. But I admired that he does all the country songs and variety shows.

Lyna : I never imagine Daesung to be quiet… Really! He’s very good at variety shows and he never fails to make me laugh when I watch ‘Family Outing’. Daesung’s voice is also my favorite… It’s perfect for lullabies. Anyway, did anything change since then? I mean your perception about him. Is he still quiet? *laughs*

Aimee : No. Dae sung is so happy and funny!

Aimee: We barely talk cause he’s so busy but I saw him on several sets including wedding dress, I think. We greeted each other with a hi, smile, and a big hug.

Lyna : Daesung gave you a hug???

Aimee : Well, we all hug each other. Actually, I hug them “hi” and “bye” like our American culture.

Lyna : I see… that’s cool!

Lyna : Do Big Bang play other musical instruments? We know GD and YB can play the piano… How about the rest? Do any of them play guitar?

Aimee: I don’t know2NE1

Lyna : You’ve just met 2NE1 recently from your stay in Korea. What are your first impressions about each of them?

Aimee: FUN and so CUTE

Aimee: I liked it cause I could have girl conversations with them

Lyna : Can you describe them each.. Like Dara, CL, Bom and Minzy?

Aimee : I like talking to them about boys, Big Bang, dance, singing, clothes…

Aimee: It’s hard to describe them individually when I first met them. I was busy determining their dance skills.

Lyna : Ok….

Aimee : but they’re thoughtful

Aimee: CL bought me a Nike tanktop once

Lyna : Really? Who are you close with?

Aimee : Dara shared her keychain and jewelry from the P.I.

Aimee: Bom gave me a box of make up as a cute present

[News] YG wants to start the year strong

According to OSEN, YG will be starting the first half of the year strong by Gummy, TOP, Daesung & 2NE1's comeback.

It is reported that Gummy will be singing the OST for a drama and Taeyang will then be releasing his solo album.
Daesung will be releasing his solo album and solo activities will start late-january or early-february after Taeyang & Big Show Concert ends, it is said that he'll reveal two songs from his album during the concert and TOP will be releasing his solo album next and all solo activities will start mid-february or early march!

2NE1 will then be releasing their 1st album which many are waiting for. YG has mentioned that 2NE1's 1st album is the most anticipated one and also one of the biggest topic amongst netizens, fans and has been receiving more attention then all other YG artists mentioned above.
* The awesome soompi kids are predicting the album to be out late March - early/mid April which is just after TOP solo activities end.

SE7EN will then make a comeback and Big Bang's album is (most probably) set for the 2nd half of 2010!

[News]YG Entertainment Moving to Own Company Building

YG Entertainment, which represents entertainers Se7en, Big Bang, and 2NE1, will move to a seven-story office building of its own in Hapjeong-dong Mapo-gu at the end of January.

YG Entertainment CEO and co-founder Yang Goon said, ”It has been 12 years since we established the agency. We would like to reestablish our determination by trying to remember when we first begin.”

Yang launched the business under the name of Yang Goon Production in the basement of a small building in Hapjeong-dong in 1997 after the breakup of Seo Tai-ji & Boys. YG’s upcoming move holds special meaning for Yang because he will be moving into an office building of his own after spending 12 years in a building with a monthly rent.

Yang said on the phone, “I, along with two other people, established YG in a small building in 1997. We have rented additional space in line with the growth of YG over the years. However, we had many difficulties because the office and the training room were in separate buildings. We will work harder to remember when we first started YG because now all of our singers and staff will be able to get together in the same place.”

Yang said they have plans to release new albums by Se7en, Big Bang, and 2NE1 once they finish the move. In addition, Yang said they have high expectations for the Japanese music scene since the group Big Bang took the “Best New Artist Award” at the 51st Japan Record Awards and at the 42nd Japan Yusen Awards last year.

However, Yang emphasized, “The construction of new buildings, including the training room and the recording studio, is aimed at developing unknown talented singers. Our biggest goal for this year is to discover and nurture beginners who are as talented as Big Bang’s G-Dragon and Tae Yang.”

The newcomer group which took the Kpop world by storm last year, 2NE1’s first minialbum title song ‘I Don’t Care’ is announced as Cyworld 2009 Best Hit Song.

According to Cyworld 2009 Annual popular song chart, 2NE1 ‘I Don’t Care’ is #1. The song is composed and written by YG Entertainment producers Teddy and Stony Skunk, and has been revealed in various versions like electronic, house, unplugged and musical versions, one of the hot topics of Kpop world last year.

Other than 2NE1’s ‘I Don’t Care’, Big Bang-2NE1 collaboration ‘Lollipop’ is at #5 on the chart, while Park Bom’s solo song ‘You & I’ is #11, 2NE1’s first single ‘Fire’ is at #14, and ‘In The Club’ is at #36. CL and MinJi’s duet song ‘Please Don’t Go’ is at #65 while ‘Let’s Go Party is at #96 on the chart – with 7 songs from the group up on the top 100 rankings.

[NEWS] YG office relocation scheduled in late January!

BIGBANG and 2NE1 are all set to move into their new YG office building to celebrate the upcoming Korean Lunar New Year Day next month (it’s on 10/02/14 which is also the Valentine's Day plus BIGBANG Electric Love Tour period in Japan)

All YG Family members such as BIGBANG,2NE1,Se7en and Gummy will relocate in this 7-storey office built near the Han River in Hapjeong-dong, Mapo-gu district around the end of January this year.

The company stated that the old office space, also in the same area, which they have been renting since 1997 is already incovenient for YG because they have been wanting to expand their ooperations and improve their recording studios.

The new place is worth ₩ 10,000,000,000 with the size of 2,078 square meters and will house YG headquarter, offices, rehearsal rooms and music recording studios and other facilities that represent the unique style of the iconic Yang Hyun Suk.
