http://news.stareastasia.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/lee-jun-ki-news-0002.jpg

Korean actor Lee Jun-ki has been voted top Hallyu Star of the year in a survey conducted by a Korean business news publication, according to a press release by his agency Mentor Entertainment on Thursday.

In a recent poll titled "2009 My Vote for Top 6 Stars of the Year", Finance and Economy News asked viewers who they thought were this year's top six entertainers in the following categories; Male idol group, Female group, Solo singer, Male actor, Female actress, Hallyu Star, Drama and Film. Each respondent was allowed to vote for one star in each category.

Results for the survey -- conducted from December 21 thru 29 -- were based on the votes cast by netizens as well as the site's Internet statistics, such as the number of times each star's news articles were read.

Amongst nominees in the Hallyu Star category including actors Bae Yong-joon, Gang Dong-won, Kwon Sang-woo, Lee Jun-ki, So Ji-sub and Song Seung-hun, Lee raked in 40 percent of the total 26,078 votes to be selected as the No. 1 Hallyu Star of 2009.

"I feel more happy and touched [by the news], perhaps because this is the last day of the year," the actor was quoted as saying. "I think it carries a bigger significance because netizens directly voted for me as this year's top Hallyu star. This year was very meaningful because I got to meet my Asian fans in Japan, China and Taiwan."

Lee, 27, became a household name after appearing as a woman-like clown in the 2005 film "The King and the Clown". He currently stars in MBC TV series "Hero", where he plays a passionate magazine reporter, and won the People's Choice Popularity award yesterday at MBC Acting Awards.

Winners in other categories of the survey were:
▲ Male idol group : TVXQ (received 56.6 percent of votes)
▲ Female group : Girls' Generation (41.1 percent)
▲ Solo singer : Rain (31.1 percent)
▲ Male actor : Yoo Seung-ho (34.5 percent)
▲ Female actress : Han Hyo-joo (52.4 percent)
▲ Drama : "Shining Inheritance" (33.3 percent)
▲ Film : "Take Off" (29 percent)

Usually, being the most searched celebrity on a search engine shows the fame that a certain person has. Well 2009 wasn't any different for these headline hoggers.

[News] Lee Jun-ki wins Martial Arts Actor award

Korean actor Lee Jun-ki will receive an award for his contribution in promoting Korea's traditional martial arts to the public through his work, according to his agency on Thursday.

Mentor Entertainment announced in a press release that the Korea Martial Arts Coalition (KMAC) will hand Lee the Martial Arts Actor award at an awards ceremony on December 20.

Lee had done martial arts in the SBS drama "Iljimae" and MBC's "Time Between Dog And Wolf."

"When I'm doing action scenes, I can show the beauty of the physical body as well as the beauty of action movements," Lee was quoted as saying. "To me, all the wounds I've gotten from doing action scenes feel like badges of honor. I am very honored and grateful to receive this award."

An official at KMAC explained that there has been a growing interest in the media to promote traditional martial arts to the general public and that Lee's work in his dramas have helped raise awareness of the sport.

Lee shot to instant stardom in 2005 playing a woman-like clown in the hit film "The King and the Clown" and was recently voted the most popular Korean Wave star in China. He currently stars in MBC TV series "Hero" as a passionate reporter working for a third-rate magazine.

[Pictures] Lee Junki fans mobilize to support Hero

It looks like Hero is going to be the next Tamra the Island, and by that I don’t mean in terms of subject matter, tone, or even ratings. I’m referring to the swift and massive response that both dramas have inspired, spurring fans to devote not just time and effort but actually money, as they take out their own advertising space to promote the drama.
In an effort to resuscitate the MBC drama (their words, not mine), which kicked off two weeks ago to a shaky start, the fan club has turned six public Seoul buses into advertising surfaces for the drama.

The buses have been plastered with Hero’s title and images and is being called “Lee Junki’s bus.” These vehicles travel lines in Seoul’s Galhyeondong and Yoido neighborhoods (No. 7613), the Yangjae station and Dongdaemun Gym (No. 407), and the Suwon and Bundang Seohyun stations (No. 720-1). The ads went up on December 1, and will remain on the buses until the drama wraps on January 13. The price tag? In the vicinity of 2 million won.
A rep from Lee Junki’s management company explained on the 2nd, “Junki-sshi is incredibly grateful. Last month, fans asked the company for permission to use the images on bus advertisements.” The drama is hoping to raise its 3%-5% ratings now that one Wednesday-Thursday competitor has bowed out (You’re Beautiful), as it heads into its third week of broadcasts.
Seriously, Korean fans amaze me (and frighten me, just a little). Not only are they incredibly passionate, they’re fast, organized, and pretty effective upon occasion. Kudos to them. This follows the project put together by overseas fans who folded and sent over 30,000 paper cranes — and by some other reports as many as 200,000 cranes — to Lee Junki to support the drama’s premiere.

[news]Hero struggles to gain ground

Now in its second week, MBC’s Hero is facing a tough road with very low ratings even as viewers are praising the drama.

The low numbers are somewhat understandable this week, since IRIS is going strong and You’re Beautiful went out on a high note with an 11.9%. Considering that it entered this three-way fray at the very end, it would have been surprising if Hero drew high numbers. Still, its 3.9% rating for Thursday’s broadcast has to hurt. (Its ratings have been on a downward trend, starting with a 5.4%, followed by a 4.9%, 4.4%, and then the 3.9%.)

Lee Junki has drawn positive criticism for his acting, but contrary to expectations, his name recognition has not had the desired effect. A source with the drama said, “Because the dramas on the other stations are strong, we had expected the early portion to face difficulty. We think that because the plot is entertaining and the acting is good, after You’re Beautiful ends, the viewer ratings will gradually rise.”

On the other hand, the viewers who are watching are responding very positively. Lee Junki’s romantic storyline with Yoon So-yi is starting to develop, as is the battle between top-tier newspaper Daese Ilbo versus Lee Junki’s team of underdogs at Yongdeok Ilbo.

Next week’s ratings should be the determining factor to whether Hero sinks or swims. Unfortunately, I don’t think things look good for the production. On the upside, I did feel a cautious optimism about its story after watching the first two episodes, and hear that things improve afterward.

[news] Lee Jun-ki says "Hero" is the perfect fit

A TV series airing in the same time slot has surpassed ratings of 30 percent and the actress who had taken on the lead female role pulled out from the drama just a week ahead of its showing due to an injury which continued to worsen. We are talking about MBC TV series "Hero" which is set to premiere this week. Hence the drama may not be under the most favorable of conditions but a somewhat merry atmosphere dominated the set of the upcoming Wednesday and Thursday night TV series. Below are excerpts from an interview with the lead actor and actress Lee Jun-ki and Yoon So-yi on Monday.

Q: It must've not been easy for you having the female lead opposite you change from Kim Min-jung to Yoon So-yi.
Lee Jun-ki (Lee): It's true that I was very frustrated and had a hard time. Both I and the crew were hoping Kim would recover quickly so that we could all start shooting together but she ended up pulling out which was disheartening for me since I'm playing the main character for this drama. But I was able to pull myself together quickly because Yoon made up her mind on this difficult decision. I think I was able to portray my character Do-hyuk better because I got the chance to look back on his relationship with Jae-in.
Yoon So-yi (Yoon): I joined the cast late so I actually felt a bit awkward on set at first but Lee took the lead well. He helped me to get along with the crew, asked me to join in with everyone for meals and even adjusted his schedule for me. I was a bit out of it for the first three days but I've been getting along much better with Lee's character Do-hyuk since then.

Q: The new shooting schedule must be a strain on your bodies as well.
Yoon: What's so sly about the human body is that it adjusts very quickly, regardless of how much or how little you let it go to sleep. (laugh) I'm still young. The psychological pressure is actually greater. The pressure that I should adjust quickly. And we're rushing since I still have a lot of scenes left to shoot so I'm worried that I might miss something.
Lee: I too, am still at a pretty young age so I shouldn't complain about such things. One thing though is that before, I used to show off my physical strength on set but these days, I talk less.

Q: You've gone through sort of an internal disturbance. What's the atmosphere like on set?
Lee: I just enjoy coming out here. It's fun just being on set and I never stop laughing. I feel like I've finally met the perfect fit for me in terms of the role and drama. I try a larger variety of acting for each take than I used to. Before, I used to prepare in advance and just show exactly that but I now try out more things than what I rehearsed using all sorts of expressions and ways of speech. I really want to give as much as I can for this role.

Q: Why do you think you're having so much fun with this?
Lee: It sort of feels like I'm just hanging out on set. I was dashing this way and rushing that way in the beginning which added a bit more of the fun element to each scene and like today, we got to wear disguises for the dance hall scene. Even Mr. Baek Yoon-shik is moving around more for his role in this drama.

Q: We heard that this scene, where you sneak into the dance hall, was shot for the third episode of the drama. Is this when you've become a newspaper reporter?
Lee: No, the scene at the dance hall is an incident linked with Jae-in. I think I'll probably become a reporter from the fourth or fifth episode, acting a journalist at Yongduk Ilbo which speaks up for and is close to the commoners.

Q: What do you mean by saying the paper is close to the commoners?
Lee: You probably already know this but the story is based on the incidents surrounding several small-timers who decide to set up a newspaper. Our competition on the other hand, is a huge newspaper company composed of elites from society. The person who sets up Yongduk Ilbo is not a mainstreamer so he represents the commoners who cannot mix with the mainstreamers. Do-hyuk's heart has been wounded since a very young age but he is a character who is very passionate and confidant.

Q: Did you meet with an actual reporter or study characters from other works to play the role of a reporter?
Lee: First of all, our drama isn't about showing how professionally I can portray a reporter's job. I rather thought that my character would be more appealing if he is someone who doesn't think he's a reporter but tries to be one. I didn't base my character on anyone in particular. But I do look up columns or interesting articles to catch the nuance reporters take on for scenes where I'm out to cover a story or try to represent the lower middle class of society.

Q: Which area would you be interested in covering if you actually became a reporter
Lee: I have always wanted to be a reporter for domestic news. Everyone becomes chivalrous at some point during their school days upon seeing social irregularities. I also liked to write back then and running around on my feet. So when I was doing part-time jobs before becoming an actor, I thought I should study hard and become a domestic news reporter if I ever did get the chance to.

Q: Yoon, we heard that you too have always wanted to play your role as a female detective.
Yoon: I made my debut in an action film so I've been very interested in detectives. That's why I looked for a female detective role whose character stands out and I could try expressing a lot with. I wanted to take on this role because my character Jae-in is different when she is working as a detective versus when she is with Do-hyuk versus when she is with her family.
Lee: I looked forward to her action scenes a lot but they weren't all that... (laugh) Although she is pretty good.
Yoon: I underwent training during my final year of high school but my body has become very stiff because I've been lazy for the past five years. I want to be good at the actions scenes but I'm also worried it might leave too strong of an impression.

Q: The atmosphere on set is good and the drama sounds interesting but you must be pressured because KBS TV series "Iris" is taking the lead for Wednesday and Thursday night dramas.
Lee: I think it was two weeks ago? My mind actually became more at ease after "Iris" surpassed a viewership rating of 30 percent. I had actually felt more pressure when it was in the 20 percent-range because playing the main character means you're responsible for the drama's success. But I've become more at ease after "Iris" breached the 30 percent mark because now it means we'll have to be lucky. I think I won't regret it at least if we seek to portray sincerity. I think this has led to us to focus more on making a good drama and not worry too much over how well it does. That's why we don't even need the feel to talk about "Iris" ratings anymore.

Q: Then what sort of drama do you hope "Hero" to be for the viewers?
Lee: Our competitors are all great but our drama too has a genuineness and appeal about it. It will receive great response by viewers who see that in our drama. I'm in shoot these days with the thought that I'm preparing a good gift to present to the viewers. I will do my best so the drama will be remembered as a well-made and fun drama which will linger in people's minds.

[news/video]Two previews for MBC’s Hero

MBC released another trailer for the upcoming Hero this week, so there are now two separate preview videos for the comedy-action series. The good news is, despite the numerous problems plaguing the production, I think the footage looks pretty smooth, and the newest cast member, Yoon So-yi, seems to be fine in her role even though she had about a year less preparation time than its star, Lee Junki. If I’d seen the trailers not knowing of the backstory with its leading actress(es), I wouldn’t think it was of any lesser quality than normal.

Well, we’ll see how the first episode actually comes together when it airs on Wednesday, November 18.
