[news] BEAST: “Shake off the painful past, our real start begins now.”

People say fall is a man’s season. A southern wind is blowing in the music industry. Cute girl groups controlled the stage, but now boy idol groups full of charisma are making the hearts of older girls skip a beat.

It has been less than a month since their debut, but the hot 6-member male group BEAST is speeding up the strong wind. With their remarkable live skills, powerful dance and each member’s individual looks, BEAST’s popularity is already spreading by the word of mouth of their fans.

Yoon Dujun Yang Yoseub Jang Hyunseung Lee Kikwang Yong Jun Hyung Son Dongwoon. JoyNews 24 met the 6 BEAST members who have such vivid personalties.

◆ “We have so many stories; if we made a ‘Human Theater*,’ there would be more than 10 episodes.”

Although it seems like BEAST has had it easy since their debut, the truth is that they have a lot of past experiences. Some have failed on the verge of debut, while others debuted but tasted bitterness. “If you make our story into ‘Human Theater*,’ more than 10 episodes would easily emerge,” said the members casually, but their words have weight behind them.

BEAST member Yoon Dujun failed to remain until the end on Mnet’s reality program ‘Hot Blood.’ The other members from that time are currently performing as 2PM and 2AM.

Jang Hyung Seung suffered when he was eliminated in a survival program even as his debut with Big Bang was right in front of him, and Lee Kikwang debuted under the name AJ as a solo artist but was unable to find huge success. Yang Yoseub, Yong Junhyung, and Song Dongwoon spent around 4-5 years as trainees in JYP.

They could have stood on stage as Big Bang and 2PM, but they don’t have any regrets about an “if only…” situation. On the contrary, their painful pasts have become the strength that allows BEAST to come together even stronger.

“My experience appearing on ‘Hot Blood’ benefitted me; it didn’t hurt me in any way. At that time, I was extremely unhappy and hurt, but little by little I matured. I looked ahead and fixed myself. It [my elimination] became an opportunity for me to practice harder and become more earnest.” (Yoon Dujun)

“I would be lying if I said that I didn’t have a hard time after I was eliminated from Big Bang. But I continued to stay in touch with the Big Bang members. A while back, I met G-Dragon and Youngbae (Taeyang) hyung on Inkigayo, and they gave me a lot of advice. They worried about me, asking if I fight with the other members of BEAST and telling to me get along well with them. I’m thankful.” (Jang Hyun Seung)

The BEAST members say with a laugh, “Maybe it’s because we all have at least one painful experience, but we consider each other a bit pathetic. They say misery loves company.”

“Since we’ve known each other since before debut, we understand each other better as well. We’re supporting each other as members and working hard,” they added, displaying their special friendship.

◆ “What makes BEAST different? Our passion* for music.”

With their long period of waiting and desire to debut, they have finally stood on stage. They put away their nervousness and the fear of “will do well?” and perfectly enjoyed their performance. This was the moment to let their long practice and stage experience shine through.

“We always thought we would be satisfied and happy after debut and our debut day would become the best day of our lives, but in reality, after we came down from the stage, we still felt like we were missing something. The youngest, Dongwoon even cried really hard…with every day that passes, performing on stage gradually becomes more and more fun. Everything is fascinating and fun, and we feel like we’ve gained enough confidence to enjoy performing.”

Around the time of BEAST’s debut, boy idol groups started returning to the music industry, and the competition began. They have an especially interesting competition with their fated rivals who debuted on the same day, MBLAQ.

BEAST said, “MBLAQ is extremely cool. The members are close and don’t seem like strangers; they’re supporting one another. We feel like the two groups are having a synergistic effect, so even we are thankful for MBLAQ’s debut.”

But the subtle competition cannot be completely ignored. When asked what set them apart from other idol groups, BEAST replied that if nothing else, their passion* for music will never be overshadowed.

Rapper Yong Junhyung in particular showed passion while making raps for this album. In addition to composing and writing lyrics, he also participated in arranging 4minute’s ‘Muzik’ and is rising to prominence.

“The composer hyungs gave me the chance to try. I feel like if I had taken someone else’s rap, it could only come out awkwardly. Thinking that this is finally the time, I showed them lyrics I had written a long time ago. Although I’m still inexperienced, I’m learning enthusiastically. In the future, I hope to include a song I’ve written myself in an album.”

BEAST said, “If the opportunity arises, we would like to make our choreography, rap, songs, the entire album ourselves.”

New group BEAST hasn’t even shown us half of what they have in store. Their take-off starts now.

[DKP SPECIAL] November is truely a Boys' Fest!

While many are saying that the world of K Pop this year has been conquered by girls' groups,November is going to be a month to prove them wrong, with the debuts of Boys groups such as Beast,MBLAQ and Child Of Empire and with the comeback of old boys such as SS501,SHINee and U Kiss, fangirls simpy can't stop screaming!!!

Let's us start with FT Tripe,as a sub group of FT Island,FT Triple can still sing with the absence of Hong Ki,debuting with "Love Letter",these three boys seem to be confident that their LOVE LETTERS will get the approvement by fangirls!

New group BEAST debuted last month with their hit song "Bad Girl",this 6 members group managed to steal girls' hearts, not only bad girls'!BEAST's popularity is rising with the unique characteristics of every members...

MBLAQ,or known as Rain's group, already so popular as people have high expectations on RAIN's boys,of course the never failed to impress us with their dancing skills, besides showing us their talents,Lee Joon also never forgets to tease fangirls with his ABS!

Not a very successful comeback with Juliette earlier this year, they made their comeback last month with Ring Ding Dong.Already topping the chart of Music Bank for 2 consecutive weeks, can they make a hat trick on Music Bank this coming week, nobody can tell.

They are the seniors of boys groups, made their comeback two weeks ago with "Love Like This".With the exploding popularity of leader Kim Hyun Joong after starring in K Drama "Boys Over Flowers",our boys here are eyeing for something big, will they be able to get an award or two with "Love Like This",thats really a great question!

To be honest,i don't really have high expectations on U Kiss at the very beginning, however, this 7 boys groups who debuted with "Not Young" last year seemed to be proving me wrong with their comeback on Music Bank Yesterday, can they be the black horse of the year???

A very simple question here, who will gain the biggest success in November?

[video] UPDATED: Nickhun, Taecyeon, Wooyoung, Chansung, Junso and Junho releases video teasers!

Straight from 2pm's official youtube channel, Video teasers from 2 of the remaining 6 members of 2pm, Junsu and Junho has been released. Could this be a teaser from their title song? Both members shared the same scenario. Strapped with vital sign wires (dont ask me, i have no idea what those are called, im not a nurse) and then later shows their vital signs from the monitor.

A few seconds of clips from a song and the message appears: What is your HEART BEATing For?

A good question that will surely boggle the minds of fans and viewers. A simple question that runs deep in your heart. If you ask me, i seriously dont know what to answer to that question. Do you?

"The fear makes my heart beat. Every morning, I ask myself a question. Can I really do this well today? Do I have what it takes? Then I say to myself. I can do this, I can. Then I feel my heartbeat. This is the start."

"The trust makes my heart beat. Even at the moment when my heart is about to stop from the pain, the trust between us put me back on my feet. Now when we are together, I can go through anything. And my heart beats with self-confidence."

Junsu's heartbeat

Music makes my heart beat
The more I listen
The more I sing
The more I stand on the stage
The harder my heart beats
I want to live like this till I die

Fans make my heart beat.
All of the fans that love me, even though I don't have much to give.
Being able to make someone happy with my music feels like a dream.
As long as there is a fan left for me, I want to sing for that fan.
It's time to stand on stage now.
My heart feels like exploding.

"The ones I love make my heart beat. The ones I give my love to, the ones I get their loves from, my families, my friends, and us seven members. Just thinking about it gives me the warmth. I want to stay with you guys forever."

[news] Idol Groups May Cause Downfall of ‘Hallyu’

It may not be an exaggeration to say that today’s Korean pop charts are literally “occupied” by boy bands and girl groups such as the Wonder Girls and TVXQ, whose members are in their late teens and early 20s and dance to computerized hip-hop music.

This trend is making it harder than ever to watch sophisticated performances by middle-aged artists on the small screen particularly during primetime hours.

Lim Jin-mo, one of the country’s most influential music critics, said the unbalanced exposure of singers to the media will undermine K-pop’s international competitiveness and eventually devastate the country’s breeding ground for young musical prodigies.

“The Korean music industry is extremely unbalanced,” Lim said in an interview with The Korea Times. “Music producers, consumers and media are all liable for that.

“Producers try to make only money-making music and consumers are moved by songs produced in that fashion. Mass media positioning itself between the two have no choice but to be swayed by both.”

The journalist-turned-music expert said putting this situation back on track is one of the key roles and original duties of music critics, but added there are few experts versed well enough in music to carry out the role and, even worse, their concern has mostly gone unheeded.

“The utmost value of today’s music consumers in listening to music is `fun.’ They no longer seek any serious messages or meanings from music as people did back in the 1980s and `90s. I’d bet this fun-oriented appetite of listeners will continue for years to come,” he said.

The 50-year-old also lashed out at the media for its failure to be objective on the matter.

“The media’s liability for this is higher,” he said. “Its basic role should be standing balanced in the middle, as reporters do, and providing people with opportunities to learn things, in an unbiased way. But it has failed to do so and even mislead the public.”

He said undue capitalism smearing the media industry as a primary reason for the malfunction.

“If they take negative positions toward a certain singer or band enjoying its heyday, their management agency might impose a sort of sanction on them, resulting in damaging their bottom line. Negative reporting is something inevitable for the media. However, I think nobody willingly runs the risk of doing so at the cost of sustaining financial losses.”

Lim described music as “social air” that helps people share contemporary sentiment and thoughts with others. “But now it is no more than just a means to make money,” he said.

Korean Wave: Double-Edged Sword

Korea’s cultural products, particularly music and film, enjoy large popularity abroad, especially in Asia. The phenomenon is referred to as “hallyu,” which means Korean cultural wave.

Capitalizing on the wave, some K-pop stars, such as Rain, the Wonder Girls and BoA, have extended their activities to other Asian countries and even the United States, the world’s largest music market.

Many deem hallyu as a huge success, touting it as a key promoter of Korean culture outside the borders. But Lim said it’s still too early to judge it a success.

“The Korean wave is a very proud thing in that it has brought Korean culture outside the border and made it international,” he said. “But I think it still falls short of showing the genuine face of our culture. In other words, what is projected through hallyu is Korean culture sophistically modified to be familiar to foreigners.”

To break into the American market, Korean musicians, including Rain and BoA, have armed themselves with fluent English-language skills and English-version songs, and have had some success, he said. “But their ultimate goal there should be standing on stage with Korean-version songs with a very Korean sound, which would be the completion of the Korean wave,” he said.

His assessment of the “corporate-style management agencies” in Korea was mixed.

Such agencies have played a key role in introducing what some call the “star-making system,” in which agencies pick up talented youngsters, train them for years and then “hit the market” with their songs, looks and even character doctored to be friendly to the market and consumers.

Among influential agencies using such a system are SM Entertainment, JYP and YG Entertainment. These agencies have produced most of the K-pop idols, including Rain, the Wonder Girls, BoA, Girls’ Generation, TVXQ and so on.

“The Korean wave is largely attributable to the star-making system,” he said. “Such a systematized process helped Korean agencies form partnerships and do business with overseas agencies, resulting in giving additional impetus to the Korean wave,” Lim added.

“But it also brought about a lack of `real’ musical artists.

“With financial backup and strategic marketing becoming crucial to appealing to the market, a growing number of talented people are doing their job for the favor of their agencies rather than sticking to their own way,” he said. “Real musicians are endangered, while those only in pursuit of popularity are cropping up.”

[news] 5 Decades of Korean Girl Bands

The Kim Sisters were arguably the first girl group in the history of Korean popular music. They debuted in their teens in the early 1950s, and were extremely popular among U.S. soldiers stationed in Korea. They played many instruments and danced, and enjoyed substantial success in the United States when they debuted there in 1959. After returning to Korea in 1970, they released a number of hit songs.

Hoping to emulate the Kim Sisters' success, there were many new "sister" groups from the late 1950s.

The Kim Sisters [Being badass]

When did this transmute into the current manufactured girl band format of four or five girls singing cute songs and pleasing mainly the eyes of male fans? Renowned pop critic Im Jin-mo says, "Since girl groups are normally the product of an entertainment management agency in all aspects of the making -- from the appearance of each member of the groups to every song they sing, the first girl 'idol' group in Korea would have been S.E.S."

S.E.S. enjoyed enormous popularity among men with their pretty faces, sweet voices and cute dance moves. They were the first to break the stereotype in the K-pop scene that girl groups do not sell. Their third album sold 780,000 copies, and S.E.S. remains the girl group that sold the most albums in K-pop history.

S.E.S (left) and Fin.K.L.

Next was Fin.K.L. who distinguished themselves from the upscale image of S.E.S. by making themselves look more approachable and eventually became their chief rival. The snow-white dresses that all members of Fin.K.L wore in their debut season were one of the best-selling fashion items in 1998, and thousands of women in their teens or twenties played their songs for their boyfriends.

In 1997 came Baby V.O.X. and in 2001 Jewelry. Girls' Generation debuted in 2007 and consists of nine multi-talented members who are fluent in English, Chinese and Japanese and are capable of singing, acting, and presenting. The journey leading to the group's debut was covered on cable channel M.net, and since then, many idol groups that followed have made the process into a reality show.

Girls' Generation

The Wonder Girls, who also debuted in 2007, became famous before they had even made their official debut through a reality show on MTV Korea. They had a huge success with "Tell Me" in 2007 and are currently in the U.S. trying to make a name there.

The year 2009 has been the heyday of girl groups, with a huge number of such groups bursting onto the scene. 2NE1, Kara, After School and 4minute are some of the most recent additions. Half a century since the debut of the Kim Sisters, girl singers are born, grow, bloom and die depending on the public's fantasies.

[NEWS] 6 membered 2PM, their first outing in 60 days

Six membered 2PM, expected to make their comeback mid November, has been revealed after the long months of being hidden behind a veil.

The night of the 6th on cable channel's OnStyle, 2PM revealed their advertisement filming through 'Star Magazine 2009.'

This is the first time that 2PM has shown themselves after their leader abruptly left the group. It marked the 60 day anniversary of his leave. The members were seen filming for an organic food brand.

Junho, Taecyeon, NichKhun, Chansung, Wooyoung, and Junsu were wearing a black and white concept outfit and smiled a lot of the camera, showing their brighter side. Junho was so into the filming that he even accidentally ripped his own shirt.

2PM looked healthy and charismatic, showing off their bodies with well defined muscles. During the interview, the members each introduced a short description of their styles and revealed make up tips.

Netizens welcomed the boys after not having seen them for so long. Some fans even mentioned that their finishing greeting was a bit disappointing, as the leader's empty spot could be felt more clearly.
