[News] G-Dragon and Taeyang on ELLE Korea

'Fast Beats' Rabbit G-Dragon VS 'Slow Flow' Turtle Taeyang
Friends from the same group and trained together since elementary school, G-Dragon and Taeyang have a lot in common. The two share a lot of things but like a coin, they also have opposite characteristics.

If G-Dragon wants something fast, Taeyang likes to flow. You can tell G-Dragon is born to be an entertainer with his moves. He knows how to capture the attention of those who watch him in front of the camera. He is also a style icon who changes the style of his hats, shoes and bags regularly. Taeyang, on the other hand, is the opposite. As an entertainer, he has a smiling face and an innocent expression. His trademark is a hat on top of his head worn in a certain angle.

Bottom line is these two are so different. In other words, because of their differences, you can't really call the two as 'rivals'. But in spite of this, there are still people who look at them that way (as rivals).

In the end, I wonder if they will play the game like the story of the turtle and the rabbit. (We don't really know the plans of their company.) Both at 23 years old, giving them labels like "idol/musician/entertainer" is tricky. For now, let's just wait for their showcase. Perhaps we'll see the real competition when they are outside YG. In 2020, I wonder which path G-Dragon and Taeyang's music will take.

[News] 5 Kpop Artist Chosen By 5 Columnist Featured In Nylon Magazine February 2010 Edition

Idol Voices

Today's idols are perfect examples of what kind of music can be performed when one wholeheartedly embraces pop. If there is an idol in our nation that can pull off the neo-soul genre, who would it be? Who is the idol with the most suitable voice for pop music? Five columnists for the pop music scene picked the following.

Big Bang - Taeyang

Is it overkill to say that Taeyang has the brightest future out of all of today's idols? I don't think so. Taeyang, through the [HOT] EP, has displayed that 'bright future' on his own. More than anything, I hold the greatest expectation for him because of the image he's held that he knows what he wants to do and he knows what he's best at, and has continued to work under that knowledge. That he qualified (as an idol singer) should come as no big surprise.

'Only Look At Me (나만바라봐)' and 'Prayer (기도)' both had a level that could only been attained by someone that knew his future. His vocals don't stop at imitating black music. He has the vibrations and technique that note R&B or Soul and doesn't overdo his voice and feelings while coating his music with a black tint. He doesn't just 'sing.' I think he can joke about himself as a 'semi-R&B vocalist.'

On a global (or American) level, he's another trend, but in Korea, he's almost unique. However, his music is made of embellished hip-hop beats. Because of this, critics say that his vocals are somewhat plain and get overwhelmed by the beats, but I think this point has become his individuality. Of course, when we start to talk about a global level, then things are different. He'll be seen as someone who is just following the trends on all levels, including vocal style. However, as a late starter, this is only normal. With time and his effort, things will naturally solve themselves.

Kim Haksun (Editor of Bo-Da)

Girls' Generation - Jessica

When I listen to recent girl groups, they're so plain vanilla that I get tired of them pretty quickly. One or two R&B main vocals who've taken up cow herding as their song style, a subvocal of karaoke level that obviously isn't considering the person who has to hear her, and if that doesn't work, then make them rap, and if it's time to give up, then wrap it all up in autotune.

But Girls' Generation's Jessica is different. When she sings so finely with her pretty enunciation, I felt a pleasure reminiscent of the high times of popular music. Jessica's vocal style has always received a lot of love from the times. It was popular, not only from the chanson dolls of 1960's Euro scene to the muses of swinging London, but the 80's Virginia Astro Sounds who received attention for their splendid beats and soft melodies, and the 70's underground's renowned composers' mainstream efforts with the 80's idols of Japan - Yukiko Okada, Iijima Mari, and so on.

Jessica's vocal style is what the Western engineers call 'shine.' Or so to say, don't have that squeaky tone but rather a beautiful, sophicated 'shining' feeling. I think her vocals are best suited for a Western-style tune. I've found that, at time, girl groups's vocals tend to just rush to throw voices around without any roots for them in the song. Sometimes, their upshot green voices just vibrate and they feel shallow. But Jessica's voice is relaxed and dignified. It reminds me of silk dyed with a classy color. Sleek and soft and every once in a while, it revives a brilliant moment. This is the pop feeling that the talented have loved.

Park Joohyuk (Columnist, Representative of Bandiaeri Music)

SHINee - Jonghyun

When fans discuss Jonghyun's vocal skills, they frequently bring up 'Hyeya (혜야)' - Alejandro Sanz's 'Y Si Fuera Ela' rearranged. In this song, Jonghyun's vocals make him sound like a Korean-speaking Julio Iglesias, but that only means his feelings are that tangible and that, despite going up and down like a rollercoaster, it still flows smoothly.

Personally, the stability isn't the only reason I like Jonghyun's vocals. His vocals are appropriately rumored as dynamic. In 'Ring Ding Dong,' his voice jumps from husky to clear, but because the autotune fills in here and there like a compound, the odd feeling can be belayed. In what I think is the most impressive SHINee song, 'JOJO,' he oozes 'roller rink synth pop' - popular in 80s' London.

In mainstream music, which has become an arena where idol groups' songs reflect Western pop trends or reinterpret it, it's true that boy idol vocals follow the American mainstream pop style but from time-to-time, Jonghyun's vocals jump that limit. Depending on preferences, the evaluation may change, but the fact that his vocals have taken the most unique place is obvious. For these reasons, I have chosen Jonghyun's voice.

Cha Woojin (Pop Columnist)

2NE1 - Park Bom

If you had to choose between an amazing voice that you find hard to like and a voice that draws your love rather than awe, which would you choose? If you choose the latter, then you are ready to listen to Park Bom's voice. As the 'vocals' of 2NE1, Park Bom has vocals that are unique from even her idol peers. If I had to add to that, I would say that instead of being a 'trained' vocal, should I say she gives me more of a 'ready to fly' feeling?

I remember that the producer, Teddy, pointed out Park Bom's voice and said, 'Nowhere will you find a voice like this,' with a half-proud half-awed tone. There's no need to underestimate it as lip-service from the sponsor. It's well-known that her role model is less the Celine Dion-type 'white' diva and more the Whitney Houston 'black' diva. This is a personal preference, but her choice emphasizes the 'expression' or 'appeal' of vocals. This is something that's hard to find in even the best trained vocals. Maybe this is why Park Bom's voice shines in urban R&B, with its electronic background music. 'New British Neo-Soul' artists, like Adele and Duffy, human vocals in the vintage electronics. The songs by artists like them.

If you describe listening to Park Bom's solo hit song 'You and I' as eating 72% cacao chocolate to your ears, you wouldn't be very wrong at all. One thing I would like to point out is that in her enunciation and song style, she tends to mumble, but if she can just kick that habit, then it won't be a hopeless goal to sound like real espresso - a 'New British Neo-Soul' artist.

Choi Minwoo (Editor of
Weiv)

2PM - Junsu

Public opinion about 2PM is that while their performance is strong enough to be associated with a circus, their vocals pale in comparison. But because of Kim Junsu's tone leaving an aftertaste at the end of the vocals, their music is good enough to listen to through an earphone. Compared to the other dazzling members, Junsu's image is very tempered. But not in terms of music.

That Junsu's voice is still gorgeous without a vocoder or any acrobatic dancing can be verified through his cover of his favorite song, 'Half the Time' by Calvin Richardson. His soulful voice, in this song at least, is almost perfect, but to enslave him like an ordinary screen for an idol group irritates me to no end. Of course, because music ranges are often limited and so insecurities tend to be exposed, you can't deny that his tone has a quality that makes you take a second look. Reverberations on such a short hook aren't things you can learn through uniform training.

On top of having a naturally beautiful voice, after taking so many songs and singing them into his own, that nasal quality that could have materialized in his voice instead developed to the point that he can pull off both the old school's ardent feeling and the new school's refreshing feeling. And so there's no way that, as the audience, I can't help but feel regret that it's impossible to feel his allure in 2PM's songs, divided into N parts. Ah, it's well-known that he's considered to have a huge black music craze, but does he know that sometimes, when he sings traditional Korean ballads, he conveys a sense of great self-pride and confidence? And that his sponsor, JYP, also has a talent for that?

[news] Bigbang News Updates

*Yoosun(actress) picked TOP as her ideal guy. She mentioned, "TOP has this charm where he's charismatic and also very funny."
http://www.newsen.com/news_view.php?uid=200912241026581001

*Kim Jinpyo(artist) revealed his thoughts about idol groups during his interview. How did he view all the idol groups these days as an artist that debuted fourteen years ago?
"When I see the idol groups today I really get the impression that they are 'really good'. The performances of the YG Entertainment artists are just great but I like SNSD(laugh)."
Also he was very positive about the idol group performances, "I think it’s very desirable what’s happening right now. About ten years ago it was only the teens that praised the idol groups but now even the parents can. Recently G-Dragon's performance became an issue, but I think it is a successful case. He finished his performance and even made it a hot issue. I think these controversies are steps that G-Dragon has to go through to become an artist."
http://www.asiae.co.kr/news/view.htm?idxno...122208274318600

*We are also looking forward to Bigbang's Taeyang and G-Dragon's joint stage at the 2009 SBS Music Festival.

*Kiss Scene TOP 10

The advertisement was for LG CYON's clear keypad phone. Both of them, wearing casual clothing, talk about each other’s most attractive parts of each other’s face looking through the clear keypad. TOP, to his 'girlfriend' Shin Saekyung, says "I think number 6(your eyes) is the prettiest~" and gently kisses her on the lips becoming a soft and gentle man.

TOP's exciting expression of affection and Shin Saekyung's shy consent made the viewers' hearts flutter. Because of this, new words such as 'Number 0 handsome guy, number 6 pretty lady' came out.

*Hu Eejae on Kang Shimjang revealed the reason why Seungri is a 'bad man'. On this episode she mentioned, "When I first met the Bigbang members while MC-ing for a music program, Seungri really gave me a really cute greeting. Even though it was my first time meeting all the members he used his hands to make bunny ears and gave me a really cute 'hi'. I was so confused because of this that I couldn't sleep that night."

*This year’s music scene based on albums and performances?
-Kil Hyesung: Out of all the Korean artists' performances this year I think Bigbang's concert was the most memorable. Inside the Olympic Park Stadium they constructed the stage to come up to right in front of the second floor viewers; it was a concert that they put in a lot of effort in for their fans. It was also impressive how they filled up all the seats in the stadium for all four days when the stadium could hold about 10,000 people at once.

*High Cut - Fashion Awards
5) Male Singers: 'Style Genius' G-Dragon
-Hwang Jinsun: G-Dragon is the only idol that is not just 'good' at dressing himself, but an icon with impact. Because of Bigbang, style became vital in the entertainment industry and there has been a change to the relationship between the singers and the fashion brands(Before fashion brands tried to avoid sponsoring singers but for G-Dragon a premium brand(which was Louis Vuitton) asked first to give him a sponsorship). One of his strongest points is that he has his own vision about fashion, not made up by all the experts. In 2009 where he did all his solo activities, he made himself the best contemporary icon through his music, performance and style. He dyed his blond, and added bold accessories etc. to make his style even more extreme. His photo shoots in the fashion magazines were impressive also. His ability to pull-off various looks despite his height and skinny-body was amazing. He is a style genius that would stand out wherever he is.
-Kim Areum: Bigbang gave grave a more fashionable look for the idol group styles which used to be more like costumes. Out of Bigbang, G-Dragon's sense and ability to understand fashion is quite amazing. It was amazing enough that there was an idol group member who wore John Galiano and Ann Demeulemeester, but it was even more amazing that he could pull those looks off in his own way. It was obvious that I was interested in what kind of fashion he was going to experiment with when I heard about his solo album. His album had a big controversy because of the plagiarism dispute; thus there were various opinions about his album. However, the style he presented on stage was even more than what we expected. His unique look where he mixed and matched many items and his blond hair made me say "wow G-Dragon". I'm really looking forward to his fashionable performances at the year-end performances.
-Lee Heeseung: There was no artist that had a unique identity as an artist after Seo Taiji. G-Dragon is worthy of being called our generations style icon since he makes all the trends. G-Dragon is the only idol that can understand and pull-off designer brands such as Ann Demuelemeester, Bernard Wellham etc. that fashion experts prefer. When Bigbang first debuted all I thought was 'oh an idol that has nice style came out'; however, their style was not just made by their stylist. Especially, their leader G-Dragon, walks in an extinct pathway of fashion with his trendy and unique fashion sense where he does not fear of experimenting with style. His sense and creativity to make his musical talent and charms into his own style is the best in our music industry right now.

[news] GQ Korea Interview with Tae Yang

Boys Don’t Cry

by WooChul Jang, Editor

Zero pretensions. 100% Real. Like a rock, a mountain range and the sun afar. TaeYang, who is soon to release his first full album, does not stop to cry. He does not pace or hesitate either. Because his performances alone speak loud and clear. A GQ interview with TaeYang, an unusual teen idol who possesses both sincerity and instinct.

TaeYang is an unusual teen idol. He is larger than life and free only within the boundaries of what’s “real,” which is defined by himself. When he asks, “I should just do my thing, right?” that is what he sincerely feels. What kind of an idol cares about sincerity?

Would you like something to drink? A beer?
Alcohol is not really…

Do you like winter? A weather like today?
I like winter because I get to put on a lot of clothes. And most of my favorite songs go well with the season, and, I don’t know, I like the warm feeling. Calm, medium tempo songs like this. I listen to Karina (Pasian)’s Slow Motion often these days. Michael Jackson’s old songs, too.

Remember? After we had our “Men of the Year” interview last year, we promised to meet again after you have gained lots of new experiences?
(Laughs) I really wanted to experience lots of new things, which you might call seductions, in 2009, but am afraid I haven’t had time to learn new things through first-hand experiences.

What were you so busy with?
To be honest, I spent over six months in the studio working with Teddy. When I wasn’t working on my album, I wanted to watch him writing and producing music to learn something from him. We just hung around listening to music together. Of course the biggest thought on my mind was the desire to make a great full album. We shared a great sense of achievement when we created something cool together and, I don’t know, a sense of happiness when we found great music and listened to it together.

Was it all good? Surely, it must have been different from when you were making “Look Only at Me.” This is your first full album we are talking about – you must have had to deal with the pressure to do better. The expectations were insanely high…The pressure was great indeed. I’ve gotten over it a bit now but I had been all anxiety until my first single came out. To tell you the truth, this interview was supposed to happen in October but I had to postpone it because I was full of anxiety and felt that I had nothing to say. Probably I wouldn’t have been able to answer any of your questions in a prudent and proper manner.

You are such a strong-headed perfectionist, almost to the degree of recklessness. Now, tell us. What did you do with your first full album?
I wanted to make music that could most truthfully and accurately reflect who I am at the age of 22 – the most comfortable and natural music. And I also considered the global standards. I wanted to make music that could be heard and impress people anywhere in the world.

Yet the way you put it out was rather puzzling. You released singles, practically saying, “Well, these are not my title tracks. They are sort of a bonus and I’m not going to promote these singles.” From the public’s point of view, it was like, “Huh?”True. I know what you mean. I’ll be frank with you. I don’t like the way things are being handled. I didn’t expect things to turn out this way. The original plan had been actively promoting my singles until my full album came out but there were simply too many other things I had to do, including the group stuff.

Are you talking about Big Bang’s promotional activities in Japan? Some people call them your “side gig (a part time job).”Something I should deal with anyway.

If you ask me, it’s not enough even if you could focus all your time and energy on things you WANT to do. Isn’t that true?
Well, things turned out this way. Of course I wanted to do things right and make an impression but…

But instead of heightening the suspense and building expectations, the whole circumstances surrounding the releases of Where U At and then Wedding Dress gave people the impression that you were just giving them a taste, a teaser, if you will. Does it make you feel uncomfortable to talk about these things we feel unhappy about up front?
Not at all. I feel unhappy about those things myself.

Isn’t it about time for you to drop a major hint for your full album?
Given the situation, I think I have no choice but to come out with a really great album. As you can tell from my singles, the songs in the new album have been upgraded when compared with the ones in my EP. They will definitely break a mold.

Break a mold?
Meaning I want to break my mold to make progress. I’m not saying I want to break from the style or form of music I’ve done so far. I mean the new album will be a bigger picture than the one I was able to plan and paint before.

So when on earth is it coming out?
I want it to be early next year but have lots of other things on my schedule already so…

What you want is not exactly what your company has in mind, is that it?
I don’t know. (Laughs) This drives me crazy. The company knows that I usually have many thoughts on my mind and the company people also have many thoughts on their minds when they handle my plans and activities.

All these complicated, confusing situations – you might want to turn them into something positive, something that can help you grow. What do you think?
I hope so.

Over the past year, what kind of a man do you think you have grown into?
I feel like I have gone through puberty all over again. A period full of stress and anxiety.

How did you relieve your stress and anxiety?
They just disappeared by themselves. I think thinking about great music and the fact that I had the outcome I had wanted sort of made those negative feelings disappear. In a way, I was able to resolve the negative thoughts and feelings accumulated inside of me through music.

And Where U At and Wedding Dress were indeed good enough to show the hard work and effort you have put into them. However, they also make one wonder whether you focus too much on the conceptual aspects when compared with “Look Only at Me.” On one hand, they have too much added to the vividness you showed in LOaM, and on the other hand, they feel like they lack something – an outcome that came about because you focused too much on the music itself, if you will.
I think I know what you mean. I needed somebody to tell me about stuff like that.

Then what about the promotions? I mean, the girlfriend issue alone. I find the press release that says, “a song truthfully describes TaeYang’s real life situation that he has never had a girlfriend” appallingly childish. Don’t you agree?
My sentiment exactly.

When it comes to things like dating a girl or singing a song, you should let things come naturally. Half-baked acting in a music video just wouldn’t do.
You’re right. I wish I could meet a woman I like and fall in love with her right away.

Did you say a woman? Right away?
Yes. That’s how I really feel. I am genuinely unhappy with that particular promotional tactic because it perpetuates my image as a young man who has never had a girlfriend. I seriously hate it when they try to put me in some sort of a box and present the image as if it were a real me.

I gather this is a very important time for you. It is a transitional period and you have to go through trials and errors that are absolutely necessary.
I’m really confident about my album. I worked on it for a long time and poured my heart and soul in it. I am not worried about the musical aspects at all but am not so sure about the rest. The biggest concern is that the timing of the release remains undecided.

I know you worry about many things but you may want to look at it from a different perspective. I mean, there are people who work their butts off but still don’t get even a single chance to shine. Compared to them, see how lucky you are!
You’re right. I should remember that.

Given the style of music you do, how favorable do you think of the current music scene is in Korea? We don’t see you often enough on music shows as it is and then I see hear that you will be on Strong Heart. I was instantly reminded of a phrase from the lyrics to Cho YongPil’s song – “Why does it make me sigh…”
It is difficult in many aspects. Be it stage performances or music programs, nothing is clearly defined or established. You can’t really do much if you choose to do strictly the musical stuff because there is only this one show that I can go on once a week like a weekly ritual.

The times are hard and musicians can’t go very far only by making good music and putting on great performances. You are a perfectionist. Doesn’t that make you feel all the lonelier?
Nevertheless I still feel motivated and privileged by the fact that I am living in the same era as so many great musicians are. I feel so small when I think about Michael Jackson. He makes me speechless. Come to think of it, that was the reason why I felt so sad but my heart swelled with happiness at the same time throughout the past year – thinking that the man lived the same time as I did, I lived the same time as he did. Although I knew I could never meet him now, I felt as if my heart would burst with happiness because I could listen to his music and watch him on stage.

That’s so great. All the more so because I know you will never use your respect for him as some sort of a gimmick to draw attention or do Michael Jackson impressions.
You’re right. It is not right to do that.

So what do you think Big Bang will do? Things happen so quickly in the current music scene that it feels like it’s been ages since Big Bang first came out.
The public image of Big Bang as a popular band is too strong and I think we are likely to choose to do easy-to-listen pop music. However, it is my personal opinion that we shouldn’t do that. We were loved by so many people and it would be meaningless if we continue to seek that kind of popularity. We should be able to use the popularity as a platform to bring our music to a higher level. I feel very strongly about it.

How does it feel to work in Japan? Must be a bit different from working as a solo. How does it affect you?
More than anything else, I love the fact that the system is so well established in Japan. They know exactly which shows/performances an artist should go on/do and what kind of stages the artist requires. But of course, a well-established system also has a downside – the fact that it is rather inflexible in many aspects. It is certainly demanding for me to fly back and forth between Japan and Korea but Japan is a much bigger market than Korea and this is an opportunity to lay the groundwork.

What your buddy and team mate G-Dragon has accomplished as a solo artist – did it make you feel motivated in any way?
I don’t know how to say this but, although JiYong and I are close friends, we are very different in terms of what we pursue musically. I really supported him in any way I could but I was never meaningfully influenced by him.

More than anything, I wish you could sing better. Of course you make people say, “How could he sing live without missing a beat while dancing so intensely?” or “Such fantastic dance moves!” or “How smooth and hip his performances are!” but these are all technical stuff. I wish I could experience the simple pleasure of listening to you sing – even if it is only you on the stage, playing the piano, and be able to say, “god, he is such a great singer!”
That’s exactly what I want to do. Actually I thought about it often. And I promise you that you will see me do that.

What are your fans like?
A lot like me. Not as much as I do, I presume, but they are a lot like me in that they have many thoughts on their minds, get anxious easily, worry about everything in advance and have bad feelings about everything.

How does that affect you?
They are music lovers before they are fans of TaeYang the musician and they keep me from losing direction. Sometimes I read posts made by my fans on the Internet. When I feel so utterly lost that I lose sight of my goals, I read what they wrote or watch the videos they posted and realize, yes, that’s where I was headed, that’s what I wanted to do and that’s what I should do.

This may sound awfully simplistic but at the end of the day, all that matters is that you do your thing.
Isn’t it?
That’s exactly what I wanted to hear and say so badly. That all I’ve got to do is do my own thing. That’s the one thing I wanted to say most during this interview: No matter how many things I have on my mind, no matter how deeply I’m worried, at the end of the day, everything’s up to me. I just need to do my own thing. What else could there be?

What motivates you these days?
Every time I go to Japan, I buy all the DVDs of my favorite musicians I can find. Watching the DVDs, I feel tremendously motivated, thinking, ah, I should do something like that, how I badly want to do something like that.

When I saw you in the WUA video with your hair the same as before and you wearing the same style cap you used to wear, I was almost brought to tears.
Really?

It is the feeling that you have when you meet someone you have trusted again and find him still committed and doing well.
Actually, I had to fight really hard to keep my style.

People wanted you to change?
Many people did. But I like comfortable clothes that make it easy to sing and dance. I don’t wear anything that is heavy or constricting. I stick to my current hair style because it never gets in the way while I dance.

But that doesn’t mean that you don’t care about your clothes or hair. You are particular and want things done exactly the way you want, right?
Of course. I am very particular in choosing what goes well with my music. The most important thing is how well certain style goes with my music. There is always a color or colors that look best with the music.

What would be different if you were 10 centimeters taller?
(Laughs) 10 centimeters are too much. How about 5 centimeters? No, if I had been taller, I wouldn’t have been able to dance like I do now. I never would have worked so hard to look larger than life on the stage. I know that it is not a matter of height that determines how tall or big you look on the stage.

Is there any particular place or way you want to perform these days? It doesn’t have to be a big, important stage.
Before it gets colder, I would like to sing with a great band on a small roadside stage where many people come and listen to me. I always dream of performances with a live band.

That is such an admirable dream. The fact that you are a teen idol signed with a major label could get in the way of your dream.
Just a simple dream of mine. I would like to create my own band and sing with them someday. I will continue to work hard to be able to make that happen.

If you pour your heart and soul to reach your goal, nothing would be impossible. You’re 22 now and life is longer than you might think it is. It’s past midnight. What’s your plan after this?
I’ll probably have something to eat and go home.

You don’t want to have a drink? Did you go out and inhale the night air tonight? How can you go home without having a drink?
(Laughs) By the way, I kept thinking about what you said during our interview last year – that I should let my self go and give in to temptation. But then I think I may end up dead if I start drinking and dating women because I would get completely lost in all that.

Don’t you think you might be able to come up with something unbelievably great while you are lost? I’m joking. You haven’t done it, so it doesn’t matter what I say. Makes me feel like you are the angel and I’m the devil here. Well, I’ve come too far to go back. I need you to promise me something, anything.
I’ll come out with a great album soon and hold the greatest concert. Isn’t that enough?

Are you going to turn the world upside down?
I don’t know.

What? Then what’s the point of doing it all? The world stays that same. Just another new song. He sings. His single is No. 3 on the chart. No. 2 on the chart. Oh, here he is again. What’s the point of doing all that? For popularity?
(Laughs) I get it. I have a bigger dream. I don’t know how long it will take or whether I will be able to make it come true. But even if it means that my life becomes short because I worry too much and that I have to give up other things in life, I want to prove that I can do really well on a stage watched around the world. I want my music I have made so far and I will make in the future to positively influence people all over the world. It is my dream that I become a musician, a singer who can do that.

What would you do if you have a piano in front of you right now?
I would like to sing and play Slow Motion I mentioned earlier. Suddenly I’m worried that my answers to your questions today might sound too mundane and boring because you asked me those questions knowing me and my concerns so well.

You worry too much. When you’re worried you might sound boring, say something sensational.
(Laughs) What should I say?

You shouldn’t ask me that. Aren’t you a good, well-behaved boy?
I don’t know. As I said earlier, I felt like I was going through a second puberty for the past year. I’ve gotten really rough. I often get cranky with people and say not-so-nice things to them.

What are you talking about? You can talk about an artist getting rough and wild at least when he has broken every one of the windows at either his company or a hotel.
(Laughs)

What do you see outside your window at home?
I see Bamsum (Bam Island). When I get up in the morning and look outside the window, I feel calm and it is a nice feeling. I hear that people are not allowed there but sometimes I wish I could go there.

How does a news report saying, “Earlier this morning, singer TaeYang was spotted singing on Bamsum” sound?
(Laughs) I don’t know when but I often think that I want to leave somewhere far away. Travel with no itinerary and no destinations.

You can go but not before you release your full album. Oh, have you decided what it will be called?
“Real.” What do you think?

Makes me want to close my eyes. You are, I see.

[UFO] Taeyang UFO Message:One is Such a Lonely Number

This is from the summer of 2008 when he just finished his solo activities. TaeYang recounts how he felt during the period. Patra’s video is coming up shortly. In the mean time, don’t forget to send in your messages for the ATY Christmas project!

It feels like only yesterday that my solo album came out but it was already two month ago. I’ve just wrapped up my 60-odd days of solo activities. Looking back, the release had been delayed quite a bit and I realize that I had made you wait for too long.
When I first held a copy of my first album in my hands, with my name on it, I remember I had this hard to describe feeling. All these memories poured out – the days I had to work alone, I used to be with the guys all the time and now I was alone in the recording studio, working by myself. Some things were more difficult but I also had some fun. It was also a very moving experience. And a proud one as well.
Most importantly, I felt responsible to do well because I knew you’d been waiting for so long. When I first started my solo activities, everything felt new. Even the TV studios where I used to feel so comfortable and familiar now felt a bit awkward. I even felt a bit overwhelmed. However, I knew you were always there for me to support me. That really helped me and gave me strength. I think I appreciated the presence of my bandmates more than ever during my solo activities. On the stage, in the dressing room – things felt a bit unfamiliar somehow and I felt lonely especially in the dressing room. I had to eat alone – had to do practically everything alone. I just missed the guys a lot. So when I was back at our apartment after a day’s work, I was just so glad to see them again.
My solo period was a real eye-opener for me. Learned lots of new things. First off, there was only me on the stage, instead of five of us, which helped me clearly realize what needed to be improved. Now I can see what I should work on and in which direction. I also realized how much the other members meant to me. To sum it up, it was just such a great, priceless experience. Last but not least, the experience helped me realize that I am the happiest when I am on stage be it as Big Bang or by myself.

[News] Two Taeyang Interviews

eDaily SPN Interview: Nov. 28, 2009

Q: What's it like to have your comeback after a year and 5 months?
It's been a while so it's really nerve-racking.

Q: What type of song is 'Wedding Dress'?
An R&B song. It's a sad song about watching the girl you love in a wedding dress, getting married to someone else. Teddy hyung has written lots of tracks, but I really liked this one so I pestered him to give it to me. (laughs)

Q: I heard you helped compose 'Wedding Dress'?
Teddy hyung made the track, I just put in the melody. I had been thinking of composing a little for a while now because if you contribute to the composition of the song, it helps you understand what type of voice and tone sound good with it. Teddy hyung suggested it so I took the opportunity.

Q: How did it feel to contribute to the composition?

It was like getting someone else's sketch and colouring it in the way I wanted to. It took a lot longer than just recording my voice to a song that had already been finished by someone else. I think this was because I tried lots of different things, like when you're colouring in.

Q: What kind of advice did Teddy give you?
He said that when I make the melody, I have to make it portray lots of different feelings so that whoever listens to it doesn't get bored. Aside from receiving advice, just watching him do his work was a huge help to me. He's the person who's influenced my life the most this year.

Q: How did he influence you specifically?
Before we started promoting in Japan, I spent just about every day with Teddy hyung. We weren't very busy at the time, so, after practice I would go straight to Teddy hyung's studio. I would watch him do his work and in his spare time we would talk about music. This is how 'Wedding Dress' and 'Where U At' were made. I even slept in the studio, in this little bed that Teddy hyung regularly uses. Now that I think about it, I was probably disturbing him quite a lot. Sorry. (laughs)

Q: The Taeyang in ‘Only Look at Me’ was a bad boy, and in ‘Wedding Dress’ a pure one. What’s the real Taeyang like?
Wedding Dress’ is more like the real me. I’ve loved before, but it’s always ended as one-sided love.

Q: Do you want to date?
Yes. President Yang keeps telling me to please get a girlfriend now too. But although I get lonely when I’m not working, I don’t think about it much when I’m really busy.

Q: Don’t you get lonely when you’re busy? It must be stressing.
When I get stressed, I just sleep. I’m the type of person who’s always thinking so I just sleep when I’m stressed, otherwise I tend to over-think everything. Alternatively, I listen to music or spend time with my dog. I get a lot less lonely when I’m with my dog.

Q: How important is Boss to Taeyang?
Very important. He’s not just a pet dog. At the moment, I can’t meet people and exchange love and friendship so Boss tends to fill up those holes in my heart. I can love him no matter what and he will always look only at me. If I didn’t have Boss, I think my personality would have become really cold and harsh.

Q: You seem to have put a lot of effort into your choreography. What is dancing to TaeYang?
I dance because I like music. To me, music and dancing are one. Neither one of them is more or less important. Whenever I do a pre-recorded performance, I ask my fans to please be quiet. It seems selfish and I’m sorry to my fans, but I just love singing and dancing to my music on stage and I want to concentrate on that moment. There was this time when we did a surprise broadcast of ‘Where U At’ and during the pre-recorded filming, my fans didn’t make a sound. It made me wonder if they were even breathing. I was so thankful that they understood me, but also very sorry.

Q: Your first solo album ‘Hot’ did so well. Does this pressure you at all? What did you earn from your last solo activities?

I didn’t feel pressured because of ‘Hot’, but because this new album will be a full one, I kept thinking that I have to show my style as well as make music that fits the time we’re in. I like classical music, but I’m young so I can’t just ignore the current trends.

When I’m working as a solo artist, I feel so much more accomplishment and satisfaction. Since Big Bang is a group, working together with the other members always comes first.

Q: What if the type of music you want to do clashes with the type of music that’s popular with the people?
What I want to do usually comes first. (laughs) President Yang is always generous about that kind of thing because he knows that I do the best when I’m doing what I want to. But that doesn’t mean I want to be stubborn in my musicianship. My dream is to make music that everyone can listen to and love. It’s very hard, though.

Q: What you want from yourself?
Well, my name’s Taeyang [sun] so I always want to be overflowing with energy. I want people to be moved and comforted when listening to my music and I also want to become more passionate.

Q: To your fans that have waited for you, and will continue to wait?

I’m sorry that I don’t have a really talkative personality and that I’m not performing on stage much. But I will return your love by making great music worth the wait. Oh, and be careful not to catch swine flu.

Hankook Daily Interview: Dec. 3, 2009

Is he part black by any chance?

A Big Bang member TaeYang's solo performances often make you wonder if he has black genes. Every time I see his bulging arm muscles cut through the air, I think I can almost hear the whoosh sound. The way he quickly adjusts his baseball cap he always seems to wear at a certain angle and the disciplined manner in which he executes his powerful performances with an indifferent face - all of those stuff I think only a black person can pull off.

His recent single Wedding Dress only deepened my suspicion about his genetic makeup. I cannot help but think that he made one step up from his solo EP “Hot” released last year. With this single, he took the first step as a composer by co-composing it with YG Entertainment’s lead producer Teddy.

TaeYang says, "It helped me express the true colors of my music. I learned a lot from Teddy. As soon as I heard the song, I thought, ‘This is going to be huge!’ I loved it! I added the melody lines and felt extremely happy with the outcome.”

The most noticeable change in him is the ease and confidence he displays on stage. Atypical of a man of blood type B, he used to become extremely nervous before he went out on stage. He fretted over the fact that he could have done better on stage, which bothered him enormously. However, he has changed now. He now knows how to enjoy being on stage and be at ease, which seems to add his onstage presence.

TaeYang says, "I feel like I’ve been upgraded, if you will. I have more confidence as well as more style. While Where U At focuses more on being grand, I put more emphasis on the lyrical aspect with Wedding Dress. With both performances, I focus on conveying intensity."

While talking about the preparations he went through for his comeback performances, he also talked about his friendship with his bandmate G-Dragon. They have been best friends since they signed with YG Entertainment 9 years ago. Being the two musical pillars of Big Bang, they offer advice for each other on their respective solo activities. They are musical collaborators as well as pillars of strength to each other.

TaeYang says, "I guess I focus too much on singing and dancing and my face gets all serious when I’m on stage. JiYong (G-Dragon) keeps telling me, ‘Please smile!’ (laughs). When he does his solo activities, I monitor his performances and visit him in his dressing room to show support."

TaeYang plans to release his first full-length album early next year. Recently, his sole interest lies in the album. He says he wants to make "a quality album from beginning to end." And when he has more experiences under his belt, he says he wishes to fill an entire album with songs based on his life story. He says, "Wedding Dress is about a one sided love but by the time I release an album like that I could write a song based on my romantic experiences (laughs)."

His musical ambition does not end there. Being a young man full of dreams, TaeYang's ultimate goal in his musical career is being an internationally renowned artist. Topping the Billboard charts is not what he has in mind, though. His ambition is something more high minded: he wants to touch people's hearts all over the world through his music, an international language.

TaeYang says, "People seem to be losing their compassion. I would like to make music that comforts and inspires people and play my music for audiences all over the world. It doesn’t matter if it is a culturally deprived place and does not have any fancy place to perform. I just want to let the people hear my music."

[video] YG releases "Wedding Dress" DANCE VERSION by taeyang

After taeyang's much awaited comeback as a solo artist last sunday at Inkigayo. You just cant get enough of taeyang, since he was gone for a year and 5 months. YG released the dance version of the music video "wedding dress". The main music video was emotional and didnt show that much dancing since the mv had to show the story line of the music video.

The music video was sad and disappointing (cause taeyang didnt end up with the girl NOT because taeyang kissed the girl :D) but fear not! There is more to come from taeyang and this is just the second step from it! (since it is the second track released from his full album which will be released next year).

REMEMBER: this is only a track from his full album, not the title track. SO.... there may be a second part or what we never know. All i know is that YG sure knows how to promote and excite fans!

Check out the dance version and see the entire choreography of the his hit single "Wedding dress"

[news] TaeYang's YonHap News Interview: Nov. 18, 2009

People in their thirties would probably think of “Your Wedding” by Yun JongShin if they hear the news of their first loves getting married, but teenagers these days would definitely hum the tune from TaeYang’s “Wedding Dress.”

TaeYang, who came out with his first solo EP and dominated the charts with his big hit single, “Look Only at Me” last year, recently came back with a single, “Wedding Dress.” He has now joined the other two fellow Big Bang members, SeungRi and G-Dragon, who came out solo before him.

When we met him for the interview on the 17th, TaeYang looked gaunt. He had a charming appearance with sweet smiling eyes and was wearing his hair in the Mohawk style and a pair of simple earrings, which looked strangely good together. People say he is the quietest one among the Big Bang members and true to his form, he looked calm and serious.

TaeYang says, “I haven’t had much sleep lately. I can’t go to sleep when I think about what I will do the next day. I never sleep well the night before my first TV performance. I seriously thought about a visit to a sleep clinic.”

He also talks about how looking back over the year, he had nearly lost belief in himself. He says, “I’ve had so many thoughts on my mind. We were going back and forth between Korea and Japan non-stop and half the time I didn’t even know what I was doing. When I was alone in our apartment while the other members were busy doing individual activities, the thought, “what am I doing all this for” weighed heavily on my heart. The answer of course was I was doing it all for myself.”

He worked even harder on his singles to keep his mind from drifting. For the first time in his life, he tried his hand in composing and co-composed his two singles with Teddy. Both the title track (?) Wedding Dress and the accompanying track “Where U At” are R&B songs. Their lyrical melodic lines and groovy beats go very well with his dancing, which effectively amplifies even the smallest body movement.

“Wedding Dress” is about a guy who has to see a woman he loves go to another man. Since one of the hot issues about him when he first came out was the fact that he had never have a girlfriend, we are curious to know how a teen idol who doesn’t have any romantic experience could express how the guy must have felt.

“Talking about how I never had a girlfriend now makes me feel embarrassed. It’s true that I have never had a girlfriend but the song is about an unrequited love. I have experienced unrequited love and I had my first love. That was more than enough to understand the emotions. Saying that I’m too busy to go out with a girl is just an excuse. I’m just not ready to have a relationship. Still I dream about love.” says TaeYang with his trademark smile.

We also asked if his fellow bandmates SeungRi and G-Dragon’s success as solo artists brought out his competitive side.

He says, “I never felt pressured because of their success. I just wanted to come out with the music I loved – music that truthfully conveys emotions. Both Look Only at Me and Wedding Dress are the kind of songs that warm your heart on a cold day. I sing sunny, cheerful songs as Big Bang. As a solo artist, I want to make music that can move people to deeper emotions.”

He says he felt heartbroken and helpless when his friend for 10 years G-Dragon was accused of plagiarism, thinking how hard his friend had worked for the album. He also says he acknowledges the criticism that the so-called “idol music” is now dominating the Korean music scene.

He says, “I agree. You hear idol music everywhere – easier to access than any other types of music. There are many different genres in music of course but people are too busy to take time to look for them. That’s why our role here is important. We have the obligation to continue to come out with quality music that has impact.”

When we tell him how people say that when Big Bang sings it, even a trot song goes to No. 1 on the charts, he says he first realized how much influence Big Bang had while he was working on “Hallelujah” they sang for the drama series, “Iris.”

He says, “But it still feels very awkward for me to be in the news and being talked about.” We can imagine that it must be difficult to deal with the cameras that follow you everywhere. “I’ve been in this field for four years now but Big Bang members are the only friends I have because I’m not so good at making new friends,” he says laughing.

Most teen idol groups last no longer than 5 years. He must have thought about Big Bang’s and his own future. He says it is a difficult question and takes time before he answers.

“If we continue to love music as much as we do now, we will continue to make albums as a group while carrying out individual activities. Personally, if I become an influential artist, I would like to do performances for a good cause to help people in need. And just like I fell in love with Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Boyz II Men and Beyonce without even realizing why I did, I want to be an artist people fall in love with without thinking why.”
