[NEWS] Jaebum is good, 2PM/JYPE is evil, 'Game Over'!

[Seoul=Newsis] Lee Monwon's Culture Criticism

There has never been such a diversion regarding a national idol group such as 2PM's Park Jaebum controversy. Disputes of nationalism, noise marketing, the tyranny of the company, and the power of the fandom all exploded within two turns. Because of this, the issue has been the topic of TV debates and current affairs.

Even so, there is still so much left to say, especially regarding the psychological foundations of Korean idol fandoms. The Park Jaebum controversy is a perfect explanation of such a topic.

Last fall, the first part of the Park Jaebum controversy regarding his Myspace comments ended on a rather positive note, with many supporters coming forward. Due to excessive noise marketing, 2PM even received some benefits from it, their name sky rocketing to instant fame. Both Park Jaebum and 2PM received great sympathy from the masses, the first, for being 'banished,' and the second, for losing Park Jaebum. Because of these benefits, they were able to win every award during the year end ceremonies and came out on top as the #1 group.

However, the second part that came about after Park Jaebum's complete withdrawal brought about the complete opposite of results. The conference with JYPE, 2PM, and their fans proved that the members of 2PM agreed wholeheartedly to Park Jaebum's withdrawal and Park Jaebum's private life became an unspeakable, severe matter. Despite it all, the arrow turned back at the rest of the members and the fans turned into antis while the fandom cracked.

The difference between the first and second part is really only one reason. It all depended on 'which side' the six members stood on. During the first part, they had no clear stance, while in the second part, they stood clearly on the side of JYPE. That one difference was the difference between heaven and hell. Of course, there are many analyzations regarding this matter in columns and articles but the context is alike. Idol fandoms had always stressed the importance of friendship between the members. During the first part of the controversy, the members had always stressed their friendship in various award ceremonies. After the second part of the controversy, they no longer do, causing the fandom to turn in the complete opposite direction.

Looking at it from an outsider's point of view, what you see is what is exactly happening. However, the explanation does not end there. If the fandom does not receive what they want from the idols, they can just leave. But the diehard fans of 2PM have now turned into diehard antis. Although they released their private lives on internet boards and emailed journalists with them, they were the ones that once strongly loved the boys the most. Their feelings are not just one of disappointment but of detestation. What exactly is the reason that gave birth to such an empire of hate?

Omitted lengthy analyzation of old idol groups HOT, GOD, Sechs Kies.

But the Park Jaebum controversy requires a new viewpoint. During the first part of his controversy, he was seen as the weaker person (TN: deserving of sympathy) for having been kicked out due to one mistake, sympathy that was received from people that had the same feelings of being pushed around by a brutal society. It was impossible not to feel sympathy for the rest of the 2PM members either. They, too, had lost Park Jaebum and they were also the weaker ones in the battle. This notion is easy to organize and easy to understand. The company is the one that is deserving of hate, but the weaker ones must be protected. As long as they were the weak, they were the idols.

The aspect of the second part of the controversy was different. Once viewed as weak, the rest of the six members turned into traiters and are now standing on the side of the strong. 2PM is the group of the strong, a group that caters to the strong, and a group that utilized their position of strength to push down those weaker than them. The fandom has now lost their projections. An idol that does not project them are no longer idols. Love and attachment takes only a moment to disappear. The fact that one loves 2PM, the fact that one love any idols of Korea, means that one also loves 'one's self.' This is not disappointment. This issue is a direct threat to one's self, and this is what brings about anger.

This is the level that must be reached in order for the fans to turn into antis, and with that change, they have also gained power. To the fans, 2PM is a presence that must be hated more than the company, a group that has brought them despair. Of course, this is just a temporary event. The terror will soon cease, but the detestation will not, and the love they once had towards them will never be revived. 2PM will be thrown away and the fans will soon find a new subject. The weakest of the weak, thrown away twice by the strong, that subject is Park Jaebum. There is not another perfect, more deserving subject than him. With a rumor about a possible American debut already circulating, the big names within the fandom have already moved to his side, with the high possibility of the rest of the fandom following.

Conclusively, the Park Jaebum controversy left a lesson to the idol market of Korea. That lesson is to never shake the foundation of Strong-Fandom-Weak, a foundation that the idol market has created itself. The notion of 'The president is our hyung, our father,' and 'We are one family with our company,' is a hopeful stance taken by companies but not particularly what the public requests for. There are no benefits stemming from becoming a 'nice company.' CF deals and singer incomes are based off of the idol's image and popularity, not exactly whether the company's image is positive or not. Celebrities with many rumors surrounding them still manage to land CF deals.

The beautiful but weak princess and the brave prince that protects her, along with the dangerous, disgusting dragon. This is a fantasy that has never changed for thousands and thousands of years. Perhaps there are situations where the dragon and the princess spark a deal and take some income from CF deals while screaming nonsense such as 'We are one family,' but in the end, it all comes down to understanding who is selling what, and to whom. Maybe then, the same mistake will not be repeated.

[NEWS] Dae Guk Nam Ah Care for Criticism‏!

[Edaily SPN YangSeungJun] Because all the members of DNA like DBSK so much when they are monitored the same image comes out. Truthfully mean comments hurt us but we don't hate them. Since we're rookies, it's and honor to be compared to DBSK sunbaes. We think criticism is essential. If we didn't care then it would be unlawful. (Dae Guk Nam Ah)

The average age of 17.4, the 5 member rookie boy group Dae Guk Nam ah. Even though the 5 boys are young they're hug hit. An emphasized harmonized debut single "Admiring Boy" and a concept that is similar to DBSK's "Hug." "Though we got criticized these criticisms make us want to work harder," says leader Mika. Dreaming of being the second DBSK is the five members of Dae Guk Nam Ah Mika, Karam, HyunMin, Injun, and Jay. 'Best influence in the music industry artist', they were not the aspirations containing 'False Fame'. The five boys, to the abilities of their ages used harmony, dance, and amazing skills to capture the attention of the fans. To make it long, 5 years, to make it short, 1 year and a half the 5 boys went through harsh practice and the hidden talent in their lives were revealed and prevailed.

The member's past is also striking. For Jay, he was picked in SBS StarKing at the age of thirteen for his phenomenal popping. Also Mika is a relative of 2PM's Junsu. Junsu, born in Daegu, is Mika's father's sister's son.

"Junsu Hyung went to the same music school as me but I just knew him as one of my teacher's students. But when I went to my grandmother's 70th birthday and sang a song, a relative of mine said that 'My son is a singer too,' and talked about Junsu Hyung. And that's how I found out that Junsu Hyung was my relative. Before debuting I looked for Junsu Hyung at the musical broadcasting studio and he told me 'If while you do singing activities and have a hard time tell me, cheering me on."(Mika)

Even though it's been 3 weeks since Dae Guk Nam Ah's official debut stage their stage is still a little unfamiliar. When also passing by the road, and the friends examine you, you can't be happy.

"If high school student know about us we become a big fuss. If they ask for our signatures we will ask, "Do you know who we are?" If we go to a music program public broadcasting fans make big flashcards cheering us on and that gives us a lot of strength. Even though we still tremble and get nervous on stage, when we see the fans our hearts can relax." (Karam)

The sunbae singers also cutely watched out for the 'Music industry's maknae'

"Outsider sunbae treats us extremely well. He also cheers us on. Later on if there is a need to do rap he said he will make lyrics for us. His words to 'work hard' have given us an immense amount of strength" (Jay)

Although I wish I could have made memories in my school life, the dream of becoming a singer has come true and day by day is happy Dae Guk Nam Ah. "Rookies of the Year," the 5 boys' eyes shone brightly throughout the interview.

"This year we will work hard and we hope that people will know 'Dae Guk Nam Ah.' Although 'Admiring Boy' a song for our age that is innocent and cute is doing well, from now on we will move on to various different concepts so please anticipate." (InJun)

Many thanks to Kingdom Prince for the tips!

[NEWS] Kim Yu-na Fails to Defend Title !

Olympic champion Kim Yu-na failed to defend her world title, as she took a silver medal at the World Figure Skating Championships in Turin, Italy Sunday (KST).

The 19-year-old scored 130.49 points in the free skating for an overall of 190.79. She wound up seventh with 60.30 in the short program Saturday after under-rotating a triple flip and missing a layback spin.

Mao Asada of Japan claimed her second world championship title with 197.58 and Finnish Laura Lepisto placed third on 178.62.

Japanese Miki Ando finished fourth and short-program leader Mirai Nagasu of the United States dropped to seventh.

Kim, who looked to rebound from her disastrous performance in the short program, landed her first four jumps cleanly, but she fell on a salchow jump and botched a double axel before wrapping up her routine.

Kwak Min-jung finished 22nd in her first appearance of the World Championships.

The 16-year-old, who racked up 47.46 points in the short, earned 73.01 in the free skate segment for 120.47 total.

[news] J.ae get’s ‘Sentimental’ with new album

When J.ae arrived for her afternoon interview, she didn`t appear primped up with a face full of teeth grinning from ear to ear as most starlets and young boy band members do when they make the media rounds.

Instead, she showed up wearing the kind of low-key under-the-radar type clothes real people wear – jeans, jumper and a warm jacket with comfortable shoes.

And why should she doll herself up when she`s been around the music game for well over a decade?

Veterans don`t have to make desperate attempts to try and impress media folks by showing off.

On this day, since going around different dailies earlier in the wee hours of the morning to promote her latest album “Sentimental,” she looked a tad grumpy about not yet having anything to eat.

“I`m feeling hungry as hell, I`m starving!” she shouted.

“Talking takes a lot out of you when you`re trying to be on and focused. Interviews can get repetitious but it`s just one album you`re trying to promote so all my answers end up being similar.”

After a two-year hiatus from the recording studio, she is back with her sixth studio album that she says has rejuvenated her love for doing good soulful music.

“It`s old school SWV meets TLC,” she said pitching the concept for her new album and putting it in a nutshell.

“I like my songs to be dry and sad. Even the upbeat tracks in the new album aren`t really upbeat.”

Sure enough, with her record company fully in support of her creative vision, her new album is full of smooth R & B tracks and runs on a consistent tone of melancholy and yearning according to the 33-year-old songstress.

“The songs on the new album aren`t trendy and don`t have repetitious hooks and beats like the music that`s out there right now. It`s not like a jingle,” she said.

“And that was my goal because the fact of the matter is, I`m not an idol – I`m not Lee Hyori, I`m not `Gee Gee Gee Gee, baby baby baby` so I was like, `Where do I go from here at this point in my career?`”

On the new album, J.ae says there was a song that is “110 percent me.”

That song, composed by one of Korea`s most revered guitarists, Sam Lee, didn`t make the final cut.

“He wrote this real simple guitar ballad and I really liked it and asked him if I could write the lyrics to it,” she said.

“I liked the song so much I didn`t want to do it injustice by doing it in English and have only five people listen to it. It took me like four weeks to do it but I did it.”

She continued saying “The song is about a long distance relationship which I`ve been through so that`s like 110 percent me. But I kicked my own song off the album. When my company asked where my song was I told them it just didn`t live up to my expectations as it was just too depressing for the album. It went on a snail`s pace and just didn`t fit in. It crawls its way to the finish line.”

For J.ae and her camp, they know all too well of the uphill battle to try and convince the masses to embrace music that isn`t all about catchy, repetitive hooks.

With the new record, she just wants to corner an entirely different niche.

“I thought I might as well make music for people who are sick of this shiny glossy stuff and want to hear music that`s smooth and easy,” she said.

“Unfortunately smooth and easy doesn`t sell here, which is why I`m appreciative of my new label. But at the same time because they`ve been so good to me, I`ve thought maybe I should have sold out a little because I want them to make money. You know I`m not such a jerk where I`m just going to do what I want to do.”

In her laments about the current trend of music, she drops Sade and Maxwell`s names as her inspiration as a singer and musician that she has aspired to throughout her career.

“My goal is to do music like Sade and Maxwell,” she said.

“Their music may not be `in` but I can guarantee you people will still be listening even after 100 years. I want to do music where people will wait for you. So when an album finally comes out people will appreciate the wait. I`ve never been fame hungry.”

One thing that stands out and is noticeable about J.ae are her eyes. There is depth and gravity to her gaze that can pull you into whatever she has to say.

She exudes a genuineness missing from the usual crop of entertainers who come to interviews armed with stock quotes of answers fed to them by their PR team or manager.

“I can be a melancholy person. That`s not to say I like to sit around with dark makeup on being moody pondering about life and death,” she said.

“Sometimes, I just I don`t have energy for people. I`m not a people person. I`d rather just stay home, watch a movie, read a book and play with my dogs. I don`t particularly enjoy opening myself up to people. People in general don`t interest me at all. Music now annoys the crap out of me. It`s just so insulting. My magnet goes towards sort of the sad stuff.”

On whether she`s an introvert, without missing a beat she says “Oh yeah, with a capital I,” and added, “Put it up on neon lights – well no, not neon lights since that would be too flashy – so may be in dark and grey.”

Before her life as J.ae, she was Jung Jae-young, a self-proclaimed tomboy from the coasts of the Bay Area in Northern California.

Hearing her talk about her salad days as an aimless free-spirited girl that at one point aspired to become a phone receptionist at a “poshy hair salon,” and after that, a nun, you start to wonder if her path to a career in music all came to her organically.

Some chase after the dream but for her, it seems she had always been meant to become a singer.

For one, she comes from a long line of family with music in their blood. Her grandfather, father, and aunt – Jung Hoon-hee – were all noted singers in Korea.

And for most of her career, J.ae has struggled to find the right balance of self-promotion and remaining low-key to be free to do what makes her happy.

“I can`t sell myself to save my life. My brother is the complete opposite and he always tells me to set up a twitter account and make a professional Facebook page but I don`t even know where to begin,” she said.

“I`ll do it because it benefits me but I just know I won`t update them and I know it`ll just fizzle, so why should I bother even starting one when I know I won`t be keeping my fans up to date on what`s going on with me.”

When she`s not at the recording studio, J.ae can be heard over the airwaves. She hosts her own daily music show titled “Music Planet” on TBS eFM seven days a week.

[news] B-boying Park Jae-beom featured in Canadian magazine

ark Jae-beom, former leader of popular Korean idol group 2PM, has been featured in a Canadian magazine while participating in a local b-boying contest.

Vancouver HYPE Magazine wrote on its online blog "justalilhype!" (http://justalilhype.com) about the former K-pop idol and ran photos of Park dancing with his b-boy crew named Art of Movement at the "Battle of T.N.G: Just Battle" contest held in Vancouver on Monday.

HYPE briefly interviewed the Korean-American singer -- who goes by the name Jay Park -- at the event, saying that he was "reluctant to shoot still shots with fans until the end of event" but he was "friendly nevertheless and talked to many of his female admirers" throughout the contest.

Park was introduced as "a superstar back in Korea" and said to have "kept a low-key presence and treated all other b-boys of the event with respect".

The article explained that although the Seattle native and his team did not win, their performance was "one of the most anticipated" numbers of the night and received "abundant cheering and screaming from his female fans."

The magazine ended the article by calling Park a "multi-talented young individual" and mentioning a video that he had released last week on popular video sharing site YouTube -- a cover of "Nothing On You" by U.S. hip-hop artist B.o.B.

Park, 22, had sparked national controversy last September after remarks -- including "I hate Korea" -- he had written on his MySpace account before his debut became public. He quit the boy band four days later and returned to his hometown of Seattle.

He was expected to make his much-awaited comeback to the group this year until agency JYP Entertainment (JYPE) announced last month that it will be terminating its contract with the singer due to "a huge personal wrongdoing" on his part.

JYPE did not reveal further details, saying it was linked to his personal life, but stated that it deemed Park "no longer fit to be the agency's artist", and that his bandmates all agreed it would be "difficult to work with Park Jae-beom as the group 2PM any longer".

After Park's departure from the group last fall, the remaining members made a successful comeback as a six-man band last December with their single "Hearbeat."
