[News]Kim So-Eun: Interview with SOHU

During the Busan Film Festival, SOHU managed to meet up with “Chu Ga-eul” – Kim So-eun. Her scenes with co-star Kim Bum were one of the reasons why many people continued with the series, and the ambiguous ending of their relationship kept many fans waiting for a clear answer.

When SOHU informed her about the passion that China fans had for the “Soeulmates” pairing, Kim So-eun laughed and said that they were just classmates, and even during the filming of [Boys Over Flowers], they were simply friends who went to Chungang University together, and there were no thoughts of taking the relationship further.

SOHU: Firstly, say hello to everyone!

KSE: Hello everyone, I’m Kim So-eun, it’s nice to meet all of you!

SOHU: Because of [Boys Over Flowers], there are many people in China who are fans of you. The show can be considered a turning point in your life, yes? Do you feel that your life is any different now?

KSE: [Boys Over Flowers] was really a turning point for me, because before that no one actually knew who I was. But because of this drama, everyone has started to know who I am and have given me their love, so I’m really happy that I have fans of my own now. In terms of my life, it does seem like there is some difference now. (Laughs)

SOHU: Do you feel that it’s hard to adjust to your sudden fame?

KSE: To be honest, this situation is like… everyone knows who I am but I don’t know who everyone is. Also, being a public figure means that everything I do is scrutinized by the masses. In this area, it was pretty hard to get used to. But now, I’m slowly getting comfortable with this.

SOHU: Filming [The Man Who Cannot Get Married] can be considered taking a new challenge, yes? What have you gained from it?

KSE: In [Boys Over Flowers], Chu Ga-eul is a high school student who’s a bit of an introvert, but in [The Man Who Cannot Get Married], Yujin is a 26 year old who is cheerful and outgoing, kinda like me in person actually. So I was thinking, should I act a little more naturally then? Through this series, I got to understand better the thoughts of people in their 20s, and I also am more familiar with the details of the working world now.

SOHU: Lots of China fans actually want Chu Ga-eul and So Yijung to end up together. What do you think of Kim Bum? Do the both of you have any possibility of ending up together as a pair?

KSE: Everyone keeps asking this question, it’s non-stop! (Laughs) I’m university schoolmates with Kim Bum, and before we filmed [Boys Over Flowers] we were already friends who went to classes together, so I really don’t have any romantic feelings towards him. We’re good friends, yes, so I hope everyone will accept our status as good friends.

SOHU: If you meet someone you like, will you stay silent and watch him from afar, or take the initiative to confess your feelings? If you get rejected like in [Boys Over Flowers], what would you do?

KSE: I’m not really like Ga-eul, I don’t know how to express my feelings very well with words, so if I like someone I’ll hide it in my heart. But for Ga-eul, she’s very expressive if she likes someone, and will be very hardworking to strive for her love. So after acting as Ga-eul, my point of view towards romance seems to have changed as well.

SOHU: Do you have any new projects as of now?

KSE: I’ve received some scripts and am reading through them now. If there is a suitable one, I believe I will see everyone again with a new drama, so please wait for a while more! (Laughs shyly)

SOHU: Do you have any hobbies outside of work?

KSE: I really like exercising, as well as reading, learning and then watching television and movies, to pick up some acting techniques from the actors in whatever I’m watching. I like going out with my friends and playing with them too. To me, being an actress is simply my job, I’m not much different from other girls my age.

SOHU: Who are you closer to, with actresses that in your age group? Is Kim So-eun like Chu Ga-eul in private?

KSE: The very popular Jandi, Hyesun unnie, we’re rather close. Also, Go Ara, because we study in the same university. We’re good friends as well.

SOHU: Do you have any Chinese artistes or directors that you admire?

KSE: Ah, I like Jay Chou from [Secret]! (The reporter’s expression then shows that she likes Jay Chou very much as well, Kim So-eun looks at her) Do you like him as well? I really, really like him very much. I love that movie, and I feel that Jay Chou is really good: he’s a director, actor and singer all at once. I admire him for being so all rounded.

SOHU: Lastly, what do you want to say to your fans in China?

KSE: Thank you for coming to Korea for this interview, and thank you for all the love that everyone has shown to [Boys Over Flowers]. I believe I will be coming out with a new drama soon, please wait patiently. I hope everyone will continue liking and supporting me, thank you! (Waves)

[News]Im Joo-hwan is one to watch in 2010

What a great year for Im Joo-hwan — he had roles in films like 2008’s Doremifasolatido and Frozen Flower, but 2009 was his year to shine. Although it was a short part, any exposure in Boys Before Flowers was enough to create a buzz, as he got when he appeared a few brief times as Kim Bum’s older brother. But it was the quirky, heartwarming and funny Little Drama That Could,Tamra the Island, that cemented his status as a rising star.

A 2010 film industry up-and-comer

“My scandal with Seo Woo? It’s because we’re such good friends”

Recently, actor Im Joo-hwan (27) acted in the MBC fusion sageuk drama Tamra the Island as scholar Park Kyu, who appears cold and aristocratic down to the core of his bones but is really warm-hearted. His mature acting wasn’t like that of a new actor, and he won the love of a multitude of viewers.

Over the past year spent filming on Jeju Island, he cultivated close friendships with the director, filming crew, and his fellow actors as they worked together. Much wasn’t expected of this cast of rookies in Tamra the Island, but their performances were unlike those of new actors and they were rewarded with praise from arts critics. But it gave rise to a scandal between him and his co-star, actress Seo Woo.

He said, “We heard about the scandal while we were filming, and Seo Woo joked, ‘Now all my endorsements will disappear and I won’t be able to get married!’ This drama doesn’t have any famous stars, and on the acting front we were a collection of newbies without anyone who could be called a veteran, so we focused on working well together. We had script readings with the other actors, and after discussing ideas among ourselves, we cautiously proposed them to the director. I did get very close to Seo Woo, but it wasn’t anything beyond that. She’s really a good dongsaeng to me. Things can get awkward when a scandal occurs, but on set it was more important to work on the drama than to get caught up in those things, so the scandal didn’t bother me too much.”

Im Joo-hwan’s potential was acknowledged when he won a newcomer award in the acting portion of the 2009 Korean Cultural Entertainment Awards for Tamra the Island.

“It was the first award I received after my debut. When I went to accept it, I was hit by a craving for some drinks. I really wanted to go drinking, more than at any other time, to drink in a boisterous group with a lot of other people. When I went onstage to receive the award, there were so many things I wanted to say, but the staff told me to keep it short so I couldn’t say much. I’m so thankful to the other actors whom I’d filmed with over a year and three months, and the people at the action school. They made me look better. I’m thankful to director Yoon Sang-ho and Seo Woo, and Hwang Chan-bin. I received my first award with this drama, and I think of this award as being given to the entire drama, not to me.”

As Park Kyu in Tamra the Island

Im Joo-hwan first met the public as a romantic doctor who loved Sung Yuri in 2006’s Snow Queen. With his gentle, warm image, he gained a lot of Japanese fans and is rising as a new Hallyu star. He even has a Japanese fanmeeting planned in December.

He said, “I’ll be meeting Japanese fans on December 13 and 14, with 800 attendees each. It’s also to promote Tamra the Island, which began broadcasting in Japan at the end of October.”

“Japanese fans even send me fan letters written in Korean. Korean fans are more positive and approach more easily, but Japanese fans find it harder to speak and are more nervous. There are some fans who will even come from Japan when I have a fansigning event at a department store, who will arrive the day before and sleep nearby in the neighborhood to attend the next day. That makes me feel uncomfortable and I tell them, ‘I’m happy that you like me, but please don’t put yourself through a lot of trouble to come.’ If high school students come wearing their school uniforms, I tell them, ‘Go to school and study.’” [Laughs]

Im Joo-hwan enjoys a lot of popularity in Korea, too. But relatively speaking, his hot popularity in Japan is comparable to other Hallyu stars. What could be the reason for that?

“I asked that to a friend who speaks Japanese well, and he said that in Japanese fan cafes, the words that come up often are ‘He’s gentle,’ ‘He’s warm,’ ‘He’s sweet,’ ‘He’s like a boy but when he shows his manly side, it’s attractive.’ They’re all positive comments, so I’m simply thankful.”

Im Joo-hwan is also famous for going into fan cafes suddenly and chatting with his fans online. When he does, news spreads like wildfire and all the fans gather in the cafe, and he satisfies his fans’ curiosity as they talk with each other.

“Someone told me that this is the first time they’ve seen an actor go into a cafe and chatting with people. When I go into the cafe, I start by saying, ‘What are you all doing not sleeping tonight?’ and we converse comfortably. Some fans tell me, ‘I’m taking care of the fishbowl.’ [Laughs] They mean that they’re the fish within the bowl. I talk and joke around with the fans in a friendly way, and those times are really meaningful to me. The fans and I bond that way.”

The 30th Blue Dragon Film Awards have just ended. Do you want to receive the new actor award in 2010?

Next year, I definitely want to receive the new actor award. I’d like to receive the supporting actor award, too. But I still think it’s a long way off. I have a long way to go in dramas, too. The new actor award is one I can only receive once in my life, so it would feel wonderful. I’d like to get it through a really great project.

In 2010, there are a lot of movies in the thriller genre. Have you thought about shedding your gentle image and challenging yourself with a villain role?

I want to try a character that makes you feel annoyed just by looking at me. I watched Inglourious Basterds recently, and the actor in role of the German officer [Christoph Waltz] was really amazing. His acting wasn’t brutal and cruel, but his speech and expressions showed complete domination over the other person. With a look that can change in an instant, he freezes the other person. I want to try a role like that.

Which actresses do you want to work with?

I’d like to act with Thirst’s Kim Hae-sook sunbae. I’d like to do a heartbreaking melodrama with her; when I watch her, I start crying without even realizing. I particularly liked her in the movie Open City. Watching her trembling as she ate a lump of sugar, I was totally crying, it was crazy.

Which male actors to you think are cool?

Lee Byung-heon sunbae. He’s really the best. I’m still lacking that level of skill so we probably won’t be acting together, but I’d be happy just standing next to him like his friend in A Bittersweet Life. I would learn a lot just by standing next to him, and receive that energy.

I hear that you’re not dating anyone right now. What’s your ideal type?

My ideal type is Charlize Theron. I like someone whose appeal changes, who can be classy but then also be provocative and sexy. She may sometimes have an innocent and cute image, but she steps on the red carpet and makes a dramatic impact that everyone sighs, “Wow.” Someone who smiles widely — since I was young, my mother always said, “Your girlfriend should smile broadly and eat well,” and because I heard that so much, it got ingrained in my head. I’d like for a girlfriend not to pick at food but eat well.

What are your acting aspirations?

I want to be like Lee Byung-heon sunbae. He doesn’t only have women as fans, but he has an appeal that even men find cool. You can feel his aura. He’s a fantastic actor, and I’d like to be appealing like him. Also, rather than doing a lot of films, I’d like to do projects where I can act well, even if it’s just one a year. I want to work hard and show more of myself.

[News] Big Bang Interview for January BPass

-Long time no see.
YB: It’s been a while. Well it’s actually only been 3 months since we last came to Japan but it seems like it’s been ages!
TOP: We can finally let everyone hear a new song. Our last powerful single, ‘GaraGaraGO!!’ let us show the power of Big Bang before returning to Korea, but we’ve now returned with a song perfect for the cool weather nowadays. It will warm your hearts.

-I see! Your new single ‘Let Me Hear Your Voice’ seems like a soft, truthful song that has blended all five of your voices together in perfect harmony.
All: Yes! Please listen to it.

-It’s got a completely different atmosphere to your last song. Was there any difficulty in singing a quiet, calm song? You also once said that “singing in Japanese is hard”.
DS: It isn’t a genre that we’ve never attempted before, so it wasn’t that hard. It’s a lot easier to sing in Japanese now because of all the difficult pronunciation practice.
YB: When we sing a dance song, it requires a lot of preparation. Before we sing it, we have to consider our movements and expressions through performances so it takes a lot longer to prepare for. But ‘Let Me Hear Your Voice’ had a slow tempo so the singing was the most important part. It didn’t take as long to make as a dance song, so it was very easy to prepare for.

-When you’re recording a fast-beat dance song, do you think about your dance moves as well?
YB: Of course. When it’s that type of song, T.O.P actually dances while he records. We consider these things even during recordings.

-It must’ve been nice then since it’s a song where you can just concentrate on your singing.
GD: Yes. It makes me happy when I’m singing it, too. It makes me feel warm inside. I also really like the lyrics.
DS: There are so many parts we like.
YB: But when we sing it on music shows, it’s disappointing that we can’t sing the whole song. The parts we like are cut to make the song shorter. It would be nice to be able to perform the whole song...It’s disappointing. Really.
VI: Yes. Like this part (sings his favourite part)
Everyone: Sounds good~
(Everyone starts singing their parts- the interview studio has become a live accapella concert hall?!)

-Thank you (laughs). About “Let Me Hear Your Voice”, how did you feel when you heard it was chosen as the opening song for the drama “Ohitorisama” starring Mizuki Arisa?

YB: We were so happy that people would be able to hear our song through a drama.
GD: I was really surprised that our song would be used as the opening song for a Japanese drama. I’ve seen quite a few Japanese dramas before and the opening songs were all really good songs, so it made me wonder ‘Are our songs classified as one of those good songs now too?’
YB: I have a question; Do the lyrics to our song fit the content of the drama?

-Yes they do. It sort of wraps around the drama.
YB: That’s a relief!
DS: I’m so happy. I’m seriously happy to hear someone say that.
TOP: At first I thought that not many people would hear our song, even through the drama. But I hope that lots of people will become interested in us and our other songs as well. Because it’s so cool to have a future where you can enjoy music and dramas together.

-The main character is a woman in her 30’s who works very hard. What do you guys think about women like that?
YB: My type of girl. I like women who are independent and can think for themselves.
VI: I like them.
GD: I think they’re brave in a way. It would be cool to be able to share thoughts and feelings with a woman like that.

-You have another new song “Ora Yeah!”
YB: The beat and chorus is good. It’s easy to sing along to and I think it’s a song that makes you want to get up and dance.

-It’s a dance song so did it take lots of time to prepare for?
YB: Yes. This song makes us want to sing “Ora Yeah!” with the audience, and that’s the type of performance we want to do.
DS: We danced while singing during the recording too.
YB: We really want to perform this live. We even put in performance parts, imagining how excited everyone will get. It’s a song that I hope you’ll look forward to.

-I’ll look forward to your live performance. What kind of year was 2009 for you guys?
TOP: I think we spent our time really well, especially since we were able to perform in Japan and stay here for so long. We were really busy though.
YB: We were here for so long that we were able to appear on Japanese TV shows. We had a great time following our Japanese schedule.
VI: It was a year where we felt close towards Japan.
TOP: We discovered lots of attractions in Japan too.

-For example?
TOP: We found lots of yummy Japanese restaurants and were able to enjoy our time promoting in Japan. At first everything was new and strange to us so we felt lonely and confused, but after finding out how great Japan is, it has become a year where we’ve been able to become used to life in Japan and concentrate on promoting more.
YB: It was also a year where we were able to meet lots of new people. We’ve met so many people in Japan and made lots of friends. That’s another way we’ve come to like Japan.

-Give us a prediction of what Big Bang will accomplish in the future.
GD: I predict…that 5 boys with great strength and power will soon dominate Japan…
TOP: I really want that to happen. We weren’t able to have a Japan Tour this year, but next year we plan to. It’s still only being planned at the moment so we’re promoting heaps so we can reach our goal of having a Japan Tour.
YB: Our Korean schedule has already been made so we’ll be really busy next year too but I really want to have a tour in Japan.
DS: We’ve already started planning it now, so I think once we carry it out it will be the best performance ever. I’m confident that it’ll be great so I hope everyone looks forward to Big Bang next year, even more than this year!

[News]Lee Yo-won feels the pressure of Seon-deok’s ratings

You’d think that with ratings in the mid-30% range, Queen Seon-deok would be satisfied with its performance, but the fact is that it has experienced a 10% drop in the past few weeks, meaning that it’s essentially lost nearly a quarter of its audience since Go Hyun-jung made her big exit. Since Go’s villainess character Mi-shil was the lifeblood of the show, now Lee Yo-won, playing the show’s titular heroine, is feeling the burden.

On the December 4 broadcast of MBC’s Section TV Entertainment Report, Lee Yo-won said, “Because Mi-shil is gone, the drama has lost tension and we see that in Queen Seon-deok’s ratings drop. They were highest when Mi-shil and Deok-man were in direct opposition, but after Mi-shil’s departure, the audience’s focus has landed on Deok-man, and I felt a lot of pressure.” She said of the decline, “Naturally Deok-man and also Bi-dam [Kim Nam-gil] and Yu-shin [Uhm Tae-woong] have responsibility for that. In the future episodes, the developments will grow between Bi-dam and Yu-shin.”

The drama is now nearing its end; the extension added twelve episodes to bring the total to 62, and the upcoming week will show Episodes 57 and 58.
