[NEWS] IRIS 2 unveils its leads!

Well well, now. Producers have announced the two lead stars of its anticipated IRIS 2: Hallyu star Jung Woo-sung and rising actor Cha Seung-won. The drama which will be produced under the title Athena, which is an international terrorist organization that provides the conflict in the sequel.

Jung plays the good guy, while Cha is the bad. Jung’s character is an agent with the national intelligence agency, named “Lee Jung-yuk”; like Lee Byung-heon’s character, he’s the top spy at the agency. Cha, on the other hand, is “Sohn Hyuk,” the “absolute leader” of Athena who trains his agents as human weapons.

Producers at Taewon Entertainment promise that they’ll be casting sufficiently noteworthy female stars and supporting actors, whom they will unveil in due time. Athena will begin filming in June in either Italy or Switzerland, two of a total of six overseas shoots that include Singapore and New Zealand. It plans for a premiere later this year.

When the rumors floated about Kwon Sang-woo’s interest in this drama, discussion pointed out that in order to live up to its predecessor, the drama would really have to go big in the casting, and it has done that with Jung Woo-sung. This is Jung’s first drama role in fifteen years; his last was 1995’s 1.5 with Shim Eun-ha.

Cha Seung-won is another great pick; he’s had a number of film roles but didn’t really break out until City Hall, where he showed both intense charisma and an ability to portray some bad-guy behavior in a compelling way. If the female leads are as strong (at least stronger than Kim Tae-hee, although it’ll be hard to top Kim So-yeon), perhaps Athena will hold its own as a worthy sequel.

[news] No end in sight to Lee Byung-hun saga

SEOUL: A former Korean baseball pitcher has accused the president of the production company behind hit Korean drama serial "Iris" of hiring thugs to assault him.

According to The Korean Times, Kang Byung-kyu, who is now a television host, claimed that the attack was connected to the ongoing Lee Byung-hun scandal involving the Korean superstar and his alleged ex-girlfriend who is known only as Kwon.

Kang, 36, told reporters as he left a police station in Seoul that he will lodge a formal complaint against the president of the production company, a Mr Chung, later this week.

He had previously turned himself in after being summoned for questioning regarding allegations that he had hired gangsters to rough up staff members of the agency that worked on "Iris".

Kang also denied rumours that claim it was he who introduced Lee to his alleged ex-girlfriend and pressured her to file a lawsuit against the "Iris" and "GI Joe" star after they parted ways.

Kwon, a former Canadian national athlete, Kwon had brought a lawsuit against Lee on December 8, accusing him of luring her into a sexual relationship with false promises of marriage.

She also claimed that Lee had gambled illegally while he was filming in the United States and Canada. She is seeking 100 million won (S$119,000) in damages.

"I know Kwon following an introduction from one of my acquaintances. I am not directly connected with the scandal," Kang explained.

He claimed the whole affair started after he began to receive threatening calls from "people from Taewon Entertainment", the production firm behind "Iris", following rumours that he engineered Kwon's law suit against Lee.

He decided to visit the shooting location of "Iris" to clear the air but was instead accosted by Chung, his aides and thugs "with baseball bats and steel chairs" for "20-30 minutes", resulting in injuries which took three weeks to heal.

Kang also denied allegations that he hired gangsters to attack Chung's associates in a tit-for-tat act of revenge. The police have been investigating the matter since December 17.

Kang had just served his sentence of 160 hours of community service in April this year after he was convicted for illegal online gambling in February.

Amid the allegations and counter-allegations continued in Seoul, Lee's alleged ex-girlfriend, Kwon, has said in an interview with Fuji TV that she will escalate her conflict with Lee.

She said she will intensify her efforts as she was "angry that Lee portrayed himself as the victim" in the public letter he had put up on his blog earlier this month.

Lee had expressed in his letter that Kwon's allegations were "malicious" and that she was "distorting the facts".

Lee has counter-sued Kwon for libel.

[News] Kang Byung Kyu Threatened IRIS Producer to Sue for Assault and Blackmail

In the latest scandal involving the KBS hit action-drama “Iris”, Kang Byung Kyu, 37, baseball pitcher-turned TV entertainer, said he is going to sue the producer of the drama for assault and blackmail.

Kang was accused of bringing in gangsters and causing a disturbance on the set of Iris in Songpa District, southern Seoul, at around 1 a.m. last Monday. He visited the set to protest to the producer whom Kang claims to have spread the rumor that he was behind the feud between Lee Byung Hun, a star of Iris, and his former girlfriend Kwon Mi Yeon.

Kwon has filed a lawsuit against Lee, saying he lured her into a sexual relationship under the false promises of marriage. Lee has denied the charge and pledged to file a lawsuit of his own, escalating the situation into a nasty legal battle.

Kang went to the police at around noon today for investigation into his alleged disturbance, but citing emotional pressure stemming from the presence of many journalists, he postponed his testimony.

Instead, he held a press conference, where he said it was the producer of Iris that called in the mob. Kang also characterized himself as the victim, claiming he was subject to a beating for about half an hour. He added that he will file the official complaint to the police soon.

[News] Kwon Sang-woo for IRIS 2?

With Lee Byung-heon most likely leaving the IRIS franchise behind when the series ends later this month, how would you feel about Kwon Sang-woo stepping in as the next leading man? According to Kwon himself, he was offered that possibility.
On December 11, he appeared on the KBS morning show Yeo Yoo Man Man to say, “These days, I’m enjoying watching IRIS. Actually, the movie I’m filming now (Into the Gunfire) is being made by the same production company as IRIS, and I received an offer to be in IRIS 2.”
However, a rep from Kwon’s side made sure to clarify the situation in a phone interview with My Daily on the 11th: “Kwon Sang-woo is currently filming the movie Into the Gunfire, and IRIS hasn’t ended yet. Casting talks aren’t yet serious. When he met with the production company president, he was asked lightly, ‘What do you think of doing it?’ IRIS 2 doesn’t yet have a director or actors, and it’s not time for casting talks yet. He was only expressing that he likes the show. Kwon Sang-woo isn’t the type to decide on a project easily. Currently, he’s fielding a lot of offers within Korea and from abroad. Of course, if he ends up shooting IRIS 2 that would be great, but the script and role may change. He plans to focus on his acting activities beginning next year.”
(Talk about protesting too much, eh? In my overactive imagination, I am seeing two possible scenarios: Either they’re trying to keep Kwon’s schedule wide open for other possibilities and don’t want to commit, or he made a faux pas by mentioning IRIS, pissed of people at Taewon, and has to now backtrack. Note that I’m making all this up in my head, but it’s amusing to ponder.)
Despite all that backpedaling and the fact that it seems too early to seriously consider casting, I’d actually like to see Kwon Sang-woo playing a spy in IRIS 2. He’s had a rough couple of years, which is partly bad luck but also partly due to questionable choices. I think he’d be a great successor for Lee Byung-heon as a recognizable Hallyu star who would have as much to gain from the role as the drama would for having him. He’s still famous, but he hasn’t had a good role in years and his post-army career has been less successful than his buddies like Song Seung-heon and So Ji-sub, populated by one disappointment after another. (His recent projects: melodrama Bad Love, weepie flop More than Blue, and underwhelming trendy drama Cinderella Man.)

[News] IRIS served with plagiarism suit

KBS’s hit spy drama IRIS has found itself entangled in plagiarism charges. On December 7, novelistPark Chul-joo filed a suit with Seoul Central District Court accusing the drama’s production company of ripping off his spy novel The Sun Doesn’t Rise on Mt. Fuji.
In his complaint, writer Park asserted that the drama takes the story, situations, and developments from his own book: “The drama IRIS heavily plagiarized my novel in over 162 instances. I have suffered severe mental distress, and I’ve also suffered financial losses, as I have had to give up the chance to produce the book as my own drama.” Included in the allegedly plagiarized points are: the threat of nuclear explosion in the middle of the city, the hero’s confrontation with the North Korean female spy, and the fact that the North Korean spy falls for the hero who treated her injuries.
According to Yonhap News, the production company refuted the claims, saying, “The plot may be similar, but it is not plagiarism.”
Often I think these plagiarism claims are cases of unfortunate coincidences — you can’t own an idea, after all. But these do sound like pretty specific points, although without having read the book, it’s hard to say…

[News] Kim So-yeon Spreads Her Acting Wings in TV Drama 'Iris'

The actress Kim So-yeon is making a fresh start in her career by playing the role of a North Korean intelligence agent who loves her South Korean counterpart in the hit TV drama "Iris." Since her debut in 1994, Kim had consistently played prim, cold-hearted characters.

She was hired literally off the street when she visited a broadcaster just for fun during her second year in middle school. At first, she was happy just to be in the entertainment business, but once her career got underway, the life of an actress proved fraught.

"I look older than my age, you know, so I was always cast in adult roles. But in fact, I was always the youngest in the cast. I could never really be at ease. I was intimidated and scared," she recalls. She frequently wondered whether acting was really for her. When acquaintances told her they wanted to become a TV celebrity, she tried to discourage them. "I thought working in the entertainment business is extremely difficult for people like me who don't have a natural flair for self-promotion," she says.

But just as she was getting fed up, the TV Drama "Gourmet" came to the rescue. For the first time since she started her career, she found that acting could be fun. "I'm very grateful to 'Gourmet' for allowing me to think again what acting is." Then came "Iris." And for the first time in years, she couldn't sleep because she wanted the part so badly.

She promised herself not to waste the opportunity. She cut her hair short and exercised every day to look more convincing as a well-trained spy, abandoning all ambition to look pretty. She read the script over and over, highlighter in hand. "I wanted the audience to see what was between the lines," she says. Her efforts paid off: thanks to her mesmerizing on-screen presence, the role kept growing from episode to episode, and now she has become one of the most important characters in "Iris."

Kim says she is surprised every day by how complex and diverse the world of acting is and each scenes where actors put on different faces. "I think I've been able to do less than 1/10 of what's out there. Will I be able to do even half? I would be really happy if that happens."

[news] New drama finds a gripping formula for success

“Iris” is the sleek new espionage/action drama that’s had viewers glued to their TV sets since it began airing on Oct. 14 at 9:55 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays on KBS-2.

Although the show’s blockbuster status can partially be attributed to its 20 billion won ($17.3 million) budget, that doesn’t tell the entire story. There have been plenty of TV dramas with equally big budgets that have failed.

The biggest attraction for the Iris audience seems to be the spectacle the drama presents. As one of the few Korean dramas with a plot focused on espionage, Iris is a rarity.

“We tried to lend as much realism as possible to the drama by using replicas of the weapons and equipment that are actually used in intelligence wars,” a member of the production crew said in an earlier interview.

The drama series also features explosive action scenes with high-tech special effects that other local television dramas have not yet dared to try. For example, one chase scene uses satellite tracking technology to follow the characters. The show’s pace is also part of the appeal. The transition time between sequences is sometimes no more than two seconds.

Overall, Iris seems to have earned its blockbuster status. The show set a record last week with an audience share of 34.1 percent for its 12th episode, which was aired on Thursday, according to a survey conducted by TNS Media.

The drama’s A-list cast, including actors Lee Byung-hun, Kim Tae-hee and Kim Seung-woo, has played a decisive role in grabbing viewer attention. Lee in particular has gained a following by doing the dangerous stuff himself, including scenes with explosives and car crashes, rather than using a stuntman.

The drama’s subject matter has also proven to be a gripping element in the show’s success. The plot centers on the nuclear situation on the Korean Peninsula and imagines the impending reunification of the two Koreas.

There is also an absorbing subplot involving the romantic entanglements of the main characters that succeeds in conveying the delicate emotions of those involved.

That could explain why Iris has drawn more female fans than males, even though it was created as an action series geared toward male viewers. A recent survey found that among the total number of female television viewers in the nation, 12.4 percent watch Iris, while 8.7 percent of the total number of male television viewers in the nation watch the show. Surprisingly, the largest group of people watching Iris is women in their 50s, at 17.3 percent.

Meanwhile, 59 percent of the show’s viewing audience was reported to be female and 41 percent was male.
