[news] Famed director James Cameron to visit Korea in May

World famous director James Cameron will be visiting Korea for the first time ever in May for the 7th annual Seoul Digital Forum (SDF), according to the forum's organizer SBS on Thursday.

Cameron, well known for his blockbusters "Terminator," "Aliens," "Titanic" and "Avatar," will be one of the guest speakers at the forum titled "Renaissance Now...Shaping Another Breakthrough" and will be giving his lecture entitled "Renaissance Now in Imagination and Technology."

His speech, followed by a press conference, will be broadcast live on SBS at 8:30 p.m. May 13.

"This will be a great opportunity for me to meet my Korean movie fans and talk about the future of film," Cameron wrote to fans through an email to SBS.

"James Cameron has always had an interest in Korea, the culture and the entertainment industry," a representative of Cameron was quoted as saying.

Cameron's sci-fi computer graphic flick "Avatar" claimed the title as the most-watched film in Korean box office history, surpassing Korean thriller "The Host." His other blockbuster "Titanic" had held onto the title in 1998 until the release of Korean espionage film "Swiri" in 1999.

"Avatar" is also the first film to have grossed an accumulate 2.6 billion dollars worldwide from box office sales.

The Seoul Digital Forum, organized by major broadcasting company SBS, was established in 2004, inviting the most prominent people in technology, information, media and entertainment to Korea. Guest speakers give speeches about current issues and trends as well as the future.

This year's SDF will be held at the Seoul Sheraton Grande Walker Hill Hotel from May 12 to 13.

[news] U.S. singer Kelly Clarkson to visit Korea in May

U.S. pop singer Kelly Clarkson will be visiting Korea next month to serve as a judge on the singing competition show "Super Star K-Season Two," according to a press release by Korea's cable music channel Mnet.

Mnet announced that the singer will be coming to Seoul to participate as a judge in the preliminary round of auditions for "Super Star K", which is Korea's equivalent of popular U.S. show "American Idol" that Clarkson won in 2002.

"Clarkson is the biggest star to come out of 'American Idol' and she is still a very active singer," an official at Mnet was quoted as saying.

Clarkson was the winner of the first season of "Idol", which has turned many of its winners and contestants into stars overnight including Clay Aiken (Season 2), Fantasia Barrino (Season 3), Carrie Underwood (Season 4), David Cook (Season 7), Kris Allen and Adam Lambert (Season 8).

The songstress will be judging the vocal talents of Korean contestants from the city of Daegu, which will take place May 3 at Seoul's CJ E&M Center. British opera singer Paul Potts, who won popular U.K. show "X-Factor," served as a guest judge on the first season of "Super" last year.

Clarkson, 27, has released four studio albums since winning "Idol" which have sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Some of her many hit singles include "A Moment Like This", "Breakaway", "Since U Been Gone", "Because of You" and the recent "My Life Would Suck Without You".

She has won a number of awards to date including two Grammys in 2006 for Best Pop Vocal Album for her second album "Breakaway" and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the single "Since U Been Gone".

[news] Mnet to host free K-pop concert in Bangkok next week

Cable music channel Mnet will be hosting a free concert in Thailand next week starring over a dozen K-pop groups, according to a press release by the broadcaster on Thursday.

Mnet announced it will hold the "ShowKing M in Bangkok" at 7 p.m. on April 6 where a total of 18 different artists, including 2AM, Brown Eyed Girls, Choshinsung, CNBLUE, Kara, Kim Tae-woo, MBLAQ, SG Wannabe, Son Ho-young, T-ara and U-Kiss, have been set to perform.

Boy band 2PM members Junsu and Wooyoung have been chosen as emcees for the event.

"Thailand is currently the advance guard for spreading Korean pop music," said the show's chief producer Kim Dong-joon. "Many Korean singers will be able to promote themsevles overseas from this performance and largely contribute in raising the popularity of the local pop music, the Korean Wave."

Korean music industry officials also explained that there are many Korean singers who will "take advantage of such big, local music show to break into overseas markets."

The free concert, which will take place at Thailand's Rajamangala National Stadium, was organized by media business company AMADAS and will be broadcast jointly by Thai terrestrial network MCOT and Korea's Mnet.

A press conference regarding the show will be held April 5 with the concert itself set to air on Mnet two weeks later.
