Korean rocker Seo Tai-ji will have sold the most albums this year, according to music website Hanteo Information System on Wednesday.
Up till the end of November 2009, the singer, songwriter and musician sold a total 227,046 copies of his 43 albums he has released since his debut in 1992, Hanteo said.
He will have sold the most number of albums this year as approximately 25 thousand more copies of his records have been sold compared to runner-up idol group Girls Generation. The nine-member girl group, who debuted in 2007, has sold 201,439 copies of their five albums so far this year.
Seotaeji debuted as a member of a metal band Sinawe but switched gears and formed a dance group Seotaiji & Boys. He then began his solo career in 1998, two years after the group’s retirement.
Popular five-member boy band Big Bang took third place having sold over 180,000 copies of their 28 albums released since 2006 and Super Junior came in fourth with over 140,000 copies sold.
Meanwhile, only two artists broke the record of selling over 100,000 albums with a single album this year. Over 127,000 copies of Big Bang leader G-Dragon's first solo album "Heartbreaker" were purchased while thirteen-member boy band Super Junior followed behind with their third album "Sorry Sorry" selling about 123,000 copies.
The statistics may differ from those released by entertainment agencies since Hanteo combines estimated sales which accounts for 15% of the measurement along with actual number of sales.
