The Asia-Pacific Film festival award ceremony took place in Kaohsiung, Taiwan on Dec. 19th. Stars including Cheryl Yang, Super Junior-M, Van Ness Wu, Gigi Leung, Aska Yang, Korean actress Jung Ryeo Won, and director John Woo were among those who attended the awards ceremony when a 6.8 earthquake hit Taiwan.
Hosts Hu Gua and Patty Hou paused momentarily after the venue was shaken several times. The camera panned across the audience and happened to find a Buddhist monk dressed in a cassock. He stood up and started to pray with a string of Buddha beads in his hands. After a commercial break, Hu Gua comforted everyone by telling them not to worry since they have a monk in attendance.
Actor-Director Leon Dai (戴立忍) continued his success with the movie ‘No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti’ after winning key awards at the Golden Horse and Taipei Film Festival. The movie was awarded with Best Director and Best Cinematography. Hong Kong veteran actor Nic Cheung (張家輝) won his fifth Best Actor award for the movie ‘The Beast Stalker’. He was asked how he would feel if he wins again prior to the ceremony. He joked, “Then I should retire.”
Actress Sandrine Pinna (張榕容) confirmed her status as one of the rising Taiwanese stars after winning Best Actress for her role in ‘Yang Yang’. She has been nominated for the Golden Horse awards two years in a role but came away without a win. Famous director John Woo was presented with a lifetime achievement award. The earthquake hit shortly after he received this award.
Special guests Gigi Leung, Aska Yang, and Super Junior-M entertained the audience with their performances. Both Gigi Leung and Aska Yang sang medleys of well-known movie theme songs. Netizens on PTT commented that Gigi Leung’s eight-song performance was quite snooze-inducing, while Aska Yang’s choices didn’t seem to be considerate of the international stars that attended the event, as all the songs were sung in Mandarin.
Super Junior-M was late getting to the venue after travelling four hours to Wu Xi, and missing their flight in Hong Kong. Their fans were extremely disappointed after it was announced that they will miss the red carpet. They went on stage shortly after the earthquake to perform ‘Super Girl’ and ‘Blue tomorrow’, in which they were suspected of lip-synching to the former. The child stars of the Oscar-winning movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ also put on a show. Although their performance wasn’t very comprehensible, they still won over the audience with their cuteness.
