DBSK might not being doing so hot right now, but Tohoshinki seems to be just dandy.
I hesitated upon writing about this since it’s basically J-pop news, but I figured that if we’re not going to be seeing DBSK in Korea anytime soon, this is the best we’re going to get. And yeah, that’s also why I didn’t report on this any earlier.
That being said….despite all the lawsuit drama that’s surrounded DBSK lately, it seems as if things are going hunkily-dorily in Japan for Tohoshinki (DBSK’s identity in Japan), especially in terms of Japan’s televised end-of-year music festival programs.
So let’s review the list, shall we?
1) Best Hits Song Festival 2009 (Nihon TV), airing on November 26th. This will be taking place at Kobe Memorial Hall, and will mark DBSK’s first public appearance in Japan since the A-Nation concert in Osaka this past August. The festival starts at 7:00 and goes on for about two hours.
2) 2009 Fuji TV FNS Music Festival, airing on December 2nd. A joint production between Fuji Network System and Fuji Television, the FNS Music Fest is a 4 and a half hour long program which airs annually on the first Wednesday of December. Up until 2008, the ratings for this program held the number 1 spot over all commercial broadcasting stations for six years in a row. On average, the ratings for this program are above 20%. Fun fact: The producer (Kikuchi P) and staffs (Otogumi) for FNS Music Fest also work on BOY POP FACTORY, which is a program on which Jaejoong and Yoochun made a major promotional appearance this past August.
And last, but definitely far from least…
3) NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen, airing on New Year’s Eve. This is one of the biggest and most prestigious annual music festivals in Japan, and for an artist to be invited to perform is not only a huge honor, but oftentimes serves as a major highlight of his or her career. The program is broadcast both nationally and internationally across television and radio, and runs for four hours and twenty-five minutes. (The last five minutes are saved for a frenzied ‘Happy New Year’ celebration, courtesy of NHK.) Fun fact: BoA had attended Kohaku from 2002 to 2007. DBSK was invited to this event for the first time last year, and will be performing again at this year’s festival.
The group will be amongst the best of the best in J-pop right now: Arashi, EXILE, Masaharu Fukiyama, NYC Boys, SMAP, TOKIO, AKB48 (who performed at the MAMA a couple of days ago), Koda Kumi, Perfume, and (a personal favorite of mine) ikimono-gakari. The festival’s prestige isn’t the only notable aspect of it, though; DBSK is guaranteed to be performing at this event, whereas the other two programs only hold possibilities of DBSK receiving awards. This prospect proves to be especially exciting for fans, who have not seen DBSK perform together as five since this summer.
Kohaku has proven to be fairly entertaining in itself; it’s set up as a sort of ‘Battle of the Sexes,’ with the male artists on the ‘White’ team and female artists on the ‘Red’ team, and the two duking it out throughout the night. For the record, the White team won last year, and you can bet that Cassies will be blanching their usual crimson dedication in the hopes of another White team victory. All in all, it should be good times.
Let’s face it, Cassies–Jaechunsu’s appearance at MAMA was kinda depressing…am I right or am I right? Hopefully we’ll be seeing a rejuvenated, happier DBSK in Japan during these upcoming events, starting this Thursday. Why, according to Cassiopeia’s ever-vigilant stalker-cammage…
Apparently he was humming. Loudly.
It appears as if Jaechunsu had left Korea in a jiffy yesterday evening, with only ten or so Cassies having received word in time to send them off at the airport. But they’re looking a little jollier than usual, which is a good thing.
After SM’s slurry of determinately anti Jaechunsu statements a few weeks ago, Avex announced that DBSK’s Japan activities for the end of this year would remain unchanged. Guess they were right. I’m still a little skeptical/worried about 2010, but nonetheless…All in all, it’ll be nice to see this group back in the limelight again for reasons other than the lawsuit.
