[News] SME Debunks News Of Henry Defending Hangeng

T/N: Translating all Hangeng VS SME articles, as they might be a reference point to JSC's case in future.

Media says Henry going solo; SM says: "We did not accept any interview."

[Sohu Korean Entertainment News] After the media reported on Hangeng's termination of contract with his management company last Monday, every media's prime concern has been whether or not SJ-M's activities in China can continue.
Previously, there were media reports on "Henry defending Hangeng" and "Henry going solo". Through an exclusive telephone interview with SM Entertainment, they stated that they did not accept any media interview.

The following is the transcript of SM Entertainment's statement:

With regards to the XKB (Guangzhou) report, "Henry defends Hangeng", that was released on 30 December 2009, our company, as a party involved, has not accepted any interviews ever since we arrived at the event location (29 December 2009). The organisers, Guangdong Television and Dongguan Broadcasting Corporation also did not schedule any interviews for us. Thus,
these are ficticious and inaccurate news by the reporters.

T/N: The following is a translation of the news article that SM debunked.

Henry defends Hangeng

Yesterday, Henry, from Korea's super popular group SJ-M, appeared in Dongguan to attend the "激情动漫嘉年华" festival as a performing artist. Due to the recent contract controversy that SJ-M's leader, Hangeng, is having with SM Entertainment, it was inevitable that Henry was asked questions relating to the issue. When the interview shifted to how there was a member of SJ-M that called Hangeng "lower than an animal", Henry said, "People who curse others are the ones that are lower than animals!"

On the night of 30 December, Sohu China's International Festival will be held at Dongguan Cultural Centre, Guangdong Television and 6 other mainstream broadcast channels will be broadcasting this 'live'. SJ-M member Henry, will be forming a last minute duo with Chinese national Zhang Li Yin, to perform at the festival.

With regards to the leader Hangeng's contract conflict with the company, Henry, who is also Chinese, took an obvious stance, siding with Hangeng. He revealed to the reporters that in order to avoid the company and the media, Hangeng turned off his mobile phone and pretended to go missing. He said, "Hangeng needs time alone to think through things calmly, but he's doing well right now, so the fans who are worried for him, please be reassured." When the reporter mentioned that there was a SJ-M member who called Hangeng "lower than an animal" earlier on, Henry's exp
ression changed and he couldn't help but gave an outburst of, "People who curse others are the ones that are lower than animals!" This made the reporters who were at the scene even more suspicious that there is already internal discord amongst the SJ-M members.

When asked whether SJ-M will attend Hunan TV's New Year's Eve Festival that is to be held on 31 December, Henry said helplessly, "To be honest, it all depends on the results of the talks between the company and Hangeng. It is useless to speak of the other guesses."

[News] TVXQ Strictly Guarded

The 60th NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen Rehearsal」 (29th、NHK Hall)

Korea's popular group Tohoshinki, who is attending Kouhaku Uta Gassen for the second consecutive time in two years, also attended the rehearsals held on the 29th.
In the midst of disbanding rumours, their rehearsal was not revealed to the press. The 5 members were unable to respond to interviews, and the mood was one of high alert.

On the Internet, fans have been expressing their worries - "This might be the last Kouhaku Uta Gassen where you can see all 5 of them together." In the midst of that, the 5 members of Tohoshinki participated in the rehearsal held at NHK Hall, at 7pm, which was after the "interview period".

Press coverage at the venue ended at 6pm. During the rehearsal, at the time when the press was shut out of the venue, an official from AVEX warded the queries of the media and only explained that "it was due to their schedules". In the end, their stage was not revealed, the members could not meet the press, and there was a tense mood all around.

Tohoshinki will be attending the TBS 「Japan Record Awards」 on the 30th and TBS 「Countdown TV」 on the 31st.
There has been no announcement for any schedule that will take place from 1 January onwards. The members arrived in Japan a few days ago, but AVEX declined to disclose whether they came together, as well as other similar queries.

Rumours of disbanding emerged in July when the 3 members, Jejung, Junsu and Yuchun, came into conflict with their management company over their exclusive contracts. They attracted a lot of overseas attention when the 5 of them did not perform together in Korea even once, after the outbreak of the conflict, but continued to appear on Japanese television. However, in the middle of this month, an event that was planned to be held in Japan in January (10 performaces) was suddenly cancelled, and the fan's worries about their disbandment grew even more.

It has not been decided yet, as to whether or not they will be having promotions for the remaining contract they still have with 「Oronamin C Drink」, their new single 「BREAK OUT!」 which will be released on 27 January, and their 'Best Album' which will be released on 17 February.

The fans' wish for the New Year is "peaceful settlement". They'll be keeping a close watch on whether or not the year-end performances will be their last.

[News] Will the Girl Group craze continue in 2010?

Will the Girl Group craze continue in 2010?

The first keyword of the Kpop is undoubtedly ‘Girl Goup’ craze. Unlike in 2008 when Wonder Girls and Girls generation took a central place, TV screens were filled with a number of girl groups in 2009.

Girls Generation, Brown Eyed Girls, 2NE1, 4minute, T-ara, Kara, f(x), Secret, Ham, After School, JQT … the music programs were full of girl group members for a fairly long time. And they swept every entertainment program. They were featured in the entertainment programs titled ‘Girl Group Special’ and eventually the real variety program, ‘Invincible Youth’ was made, which consisted of only girl group members.

The K-pop’s main concern is if the Girl Group craze will continue in 2010. There are three opinions on the question.

The first one is that the Girl Group craze is still alive, Girls Generation and other groups almost swept the year-end music awards, and the spending trends of the public will not change so easily. It is evident in the ‘Pink Paper’ issued by Mnet. Among singing ability, appearance, friendliness, trend, album, entertainment program, performance, TV show, commercial and so on, ‘Bigmama’ was chosen in the singing ability section and ‘MC Mong’, in the entertainment program section but Girls Generation was picked in all the rest by male fans. Especially the fact that there’s no other way of attracting the eyes of the male fans supports the effectiveness of the girl group craze.

The second one is that the late-comers and the groups preparing for their debut might not be able to call public attention in a condition where it is focused on the front-runners. T-ara and f(x), they are said to be the last one. The girl groups who had appeared after their debut dropped the curtain after receiving attention for a short time or appearing on TV once or twice. The Rainbow produced by the large agency, DSP got attention even before their debut, but after that, their impact was practically insignificant.

On this account, the late-starters without any distinct features will have a tough time while Girls Generation, Brown Eyed Girls, 2NE1, 4minute, T-ara, etc, the front-runners continuing their activities in 2010.

The third one is that the power of the girl group craze will completely disappear. If they become similar to each other, they cannot receive any more public curiosity and interest. Also 2PM, Mblaq, Beast, ZE:A, Big Bang and so forth will probably start their activities again. It was not the absence of male groups that led to the success of girl groups. But you can predict that the craze will die down with the appearance of the boy groups.

So some people say that as the Wonder Girls are acting on the world stage, it is the practicable way of sustaining the craze to advance into foreign markets. The Girls Generation’s Asian tour next year may not differ much from it.

An official from the music industry said, “What is clear is that the public cannot find a distinct character from each of the girl groups. Becoming similar to each other, the front-runners will just remain as mere girl groups not as the leading role of the craze”, but also said, “If the society continues to have an atmosphere of solemnity, the influence of the girl groups will continue to some degree, though it cannot be a craze.”
