[Info] 2009 Soompi Gayo Awards Show

The 2009 Soompi Gayo Award Show is upon us. This year it will be held again on New Year's Eve,December 31. In case you don't know the history, this is already the 5th year we are organizing this event to recognize the top performers in Korean music. S Radio Club will broadcast this event live, playing the top hit songs of 2009 and announcing the winners of each category. The show will begin at 7:00 EST and it will last about 2.5 to 3 hours. Be sure to tune in and witness your favorite singers taking home more awards before the new year begins.
  
There are 3 new awards added this year:
  
1. Chart Champion Award - given to the one artist who scores the most accumulated points on our weekly music charts in 2009. This is similar to the Dae Sang award in the past or "artist of the year" many shows are calling it now, and is considered very prestigious. All artists, including rookies, are eligible for this award.
  
2. Best mixed group - there aren't too many mixed groups in Korea now but they should be recognized as well. Like the other artist award categories, there will be 3 awards (gold, silver, bronze) to be presented. 
  
3. Best male-female duets or collaborations - co-ed collaborations have become an increasingly popular trend in today's k-pop music. Unlike the mixed groups, these songs are considered one-off collaborations between artists. One award will be presented.
  
Voting - Like last year, we’ll announce the top 10 singers of 2009 at the end of the awards show, and you will be voting for this award from a pool of 25 singers. Your vote will count 40% (more details from below) this year. We used to incorporate album sales into consideration. However, album sales figures are no longer readily accessible by the general public now. So we are going to increase the fan voting score. All other awards are based solely on our soompi weekly music chart scores.
  
Top 10 singers: We select 25 singers (names in alphabetical order) who have been in the music industry for more than 1 year. Newcomers don’t qualify for this award. These 25 singers received the highest scores combined on our weekly music chart in 2009. After adding your votes, 10 of them will become our top 10 singers of 2009:

The calculation method of the Top 10 singers is as follows:
  
60% from our weekly music chart scores, adjusted for competition, seasonal, and positional factors. (Note: Collaboration song scores will be divided equally between participating artists.) 
  
Competition: The total scores of all 50 songs added up for each week, compared to average score (over 51 weeks) in 2009. The weeks with above average scores mean that the songs in that week are facing stronger competition, and thus are "rewarded" with an adjustment factor to which it is above the average score. Likewise, songs appearing in a week that is under average are "penalized" with an adjustment factor to which it is under the average score.
  
Seasonal: Albums and songs released towards the end of the year are weighted higher than the beginning of the year because more popular singers and important albums are usually released in the second half of the year. We are using an increment of 0.01 each week, starting from January week 1 with a factor of 0.75. July week 1 is the mid-year point and the factor is 1. December week 3 is our last week and the factor is 1.25. 
  
Position factor: To reward songs that rank higher in the chart, I assign a weight for each song each week. Even though our weekly chart has 50 songs, the focus is still on the top 20 songs. As a result, songs from No. 1 to No. 20 will receive a considerably higher factor than songs from No. 21 to No. 50 each week, as follows:

[News] Kim Hyun Joong ‘visited’ the police station frequently during school days

In the last part of ‘MBC ‘Golden Fishery Radio Show - SS501 Special’ on 16th Dec, SS501 chosen ‘GOD’s songs - For Mum’ as the most classic idol song. After which they said out the reason why.

When the program host asked: “Do all your mums always worry about you during school days?’

Kim Hyun Joong replied: “I often fight when I was a student and often go in and out of the the police station. The host was shocked wth Kim Hyun Joong’s words.

Kim Hyun Joong continued: “I thought fighting was cool, but now I understand that people need to have discipline. When I was in high school, I felt that the school taught things that are useless so I make my own decisions to drop out of the school. I feel sorry that I have done my mum wrong. Every time when my mum drove me to school, I would hided behind the school gates and wait until my mum had left, then I skipped class and escaped from the school.”

“During school days, my mum was taken to the school with a car because I was always fighting. She has to hide herself when reaching the school gate as she is afraid of losing face.”

Kim Hyun Joong also mentioned about how he debut as an artist. “I started working after dropping out of the school. One day, I was being selected by the company when I was working in the Family Restaurant (T.G.I. Friday)”

[News] Jang Geun Suk: ‘During filming, I fell in love with…’

During the filming of KBS2 TV ‘Jang Geun Suk – Ideal Type World Cup Special’, Jang Geun Sukmade a few shocking confessions.

He confesses that he had fallen in love during drama filming.

It was during the time where I was filming ‘Hwang Jing Yi’ and it was a difficult period as I had just broken up with my girlfriend. I was too engrossed in my role and I ended up liking Han Ji Won nuna alot.

When I was filming ‘Hong Gil Dong’, I had a few kiss scenes with Sung Yuri nuna. My heart was fluttering when I filmed the scenes.- Jang Geun Suk

Jang Geun Suk revealed that Park Shin Hye and him has a special relationship.

We lived in the same Dong-ne (neighbourhood) and my mum specially likes Park Shin Hye. At one time, she even thinks that we were well-matched.-Jang Geun Suk

When asked what he thought of ‘well-matched’, Jang Geun Suk replied that he feels the same way too. (OMG!) ‘My mum even asked me to invite her over to our house.’

What’s more interesting is that Sung Yuri and Han Ji Won made a special appearance at the back part of the show, making Jang Geun Suk even more nervous! ^^

[News] Kim Tae Hee: ‘I wasn’t given the role of Seung Hee at first..’

The day after IRIS’s ending, Kim Tae Hee consented to an interview at a cafe in Kang Nam, Seoul.

''At first, I was offered the role of Sung Hwa (the N.Korean Spy). I felt that it didn’t match with me, so I rejected it. In the end, I was given a more suitable role (laughs)''

She added that because her face was ‘round-ish’ and plus the fact that she was short, she felt that the role of Sung Hwa was unsuitable for her. Many viewers have commented that the love story in IRIS seems very real and this leads to speculations (as usual) that there might be some mutual attraction going on. To this, Kim Tae Hee replies that it is even better for the show if viewers think this way but stresses that there is no truth in it.

When asked how she’s going to spend this Christmas, she replies that she will attend mass and then spend the rest of the time with her family.

[News] Mir almost got married?

On the upcoming episode of SBS variety show, "Quiz! Sixth Sense Battle", Mir (MBLAQ) revealed a shocking incident in which he was just a few signatures away from getting married.

During a discussion about dating, Mir said, "I have received real marriage documents before."

He added, "A fan came up to me and asked me to marry her. I did not take her seriously, and jokingly replied 'okay'. Next time I saw her, she brought marriage documents with her parent's confirmation on it and asked me to confirm it as well."

So how close was he to marrying that fan? He said, "If my parents and I signed the papers, it would have been a real marriage. Eventually, I persuaded the fan and escaped the uncomfortable situation."

[News] Fake’ Big Bang group? “They are just a group under Korean style of training”

After discussion of overseas ‘fake’ or parody groups following Korean girlgroups like So Nyeo Shi Dae and 2NE1 posted up recently online, another overseas group has caught the attention of netizens – and they are called the ‘fake’ Big Bang group.

The members of this group, Ok-Bang, are seen in similiar concept with that of Big Bang and they are now one of the hot issues in China.

With such Chinese idol groups so similar to that of Korean idol groups, what is the public opinion?

Following this, according to those posted up by the Chinese media, the opinions have been positive. Chinese media are quoted saying, “It seems that the Chinese music industry has adopted the training system which the Korean music industry is using. For the case of Ok-Bang, they received training like that of the Koreans. The group’s management company in Beijing has hired Korean trainers. With that, they are equipped with similar skills in terms of vocal training and choreography.”

But as for the netizens, their opinions are however not as positive. There were some Chinese netizens who welcomed this new generation of idols while there were some who said, “Ok-Bang is like the fake version of Big Bang” etc.
