[News] Heaven's Postman PressConference Q& A with the press

An idol group singer. A joint production between Korea and Japan. Fantasy-romance. The combination of these three elements may make viewers feel unsure about film "Postman to Heaven" at first glance, but it would be too early to make any judgements just yet.

Director Lee Byung-hun, actress Han Hyo-joo and boy band TVXQ member Hero Jaejoong turned up at a press screening on Monday for "Postman", the second of the telecinema projects where a Korean director, Japanese screenwriter and Hallyu stars have gotten together to produce a total of eight films.

In "Postman", Hero plays Jae-joon, the postman from heaven, who delivers letters living people have written to their loved ones in heaven. He comes across Hana, played by Han, who writes a letter full of resentment to the dead man that she used to love, reveals his presence to her, and the two start writing responses to the letters for the saddened people who are left in the real world.

Needless to say, the co-stars of the film are top stars in their respective fields of the entertainment industry and screenwriter Eriko Kitagawa, nicknamed 'the god of love stories' for her various hit dramas including "Long Vacation" and "Sora Kara Furu Ichioku no Hoshi", turns the fairy tale into a fairy tale-like romance. Director Lee backs up the fantasy even further with his beautiful imagery, as he displayed in dramas "Sorry, I Love You" and "Snow Queen";

Below are excerpts from the press conference held after a screening for the film, set for release on November 11, which waited a year for its showing to the world.

Q: We heard that Erika Kitakawa started writing "Postman to Heaven" with Hero in mind. Why do you think that is? And is there anything the writer or director requested for in particular to you Hero?
Director Lee Hyung-min (Lee): Since the telecinemas are a joint project between Korea and Japan, we thought Hero who is widely known as a member of TVXQ, would be good for the part considering the fact the movie would be shown in Japan too. I actually didn't even know who TVXQ was but I now know the names of all the members. (laugh) And during filming, I realized why the screenwriter wanted Hero to play the part. We were in shoot for over a term of four weeks and during that time, Hero would perform in Asia but come to set right after he got off the plane to practice and shoot his scenes. His acting was good although it was his first time and he would have been done a better job if he had been able to just focus on the movie.

Q: Were you able to feel any differences between Korean scripts and one written by a Japanese writer?
Han Hyo-joo (Han): When I first got the script, there were parts I didn't quite understand or lines that didn't make sense to me. There were also parts I wasn't too sure about so in the beginning, I got the original script in Japanese and looked it over alongside the one in Korean and studied both. I ended up just going with how I felt but it was good because it was a different experience.
Hero Jaejoong (Hero): I got the Korean script first which had been translated from Japanese but I didn't really understand it because it was my first time acting and I didn't know how I should analyze it. But director Lee said he wanted to go with the lines that the writer had originally written rather than change them so he helped me to study and practice many of the lines which had difficult nuances.
Lee: These two are good at Japanese but I don't know the language. So when it became difficult for me to catch the emotions the script was trying to display at certain points, we all studied and worked together on those scenes.

Q: There were some slightly corny lines toward the latter half of the movie. How did it feel and did you make any bloopers doing the scenes?
Hero: In the end of the film, there is a scene where we say things such as 'Haven't we met somewhere before?' and I'll respond, "In my dreams?" I felt a bit weird saying that. It would've felt less awkward if I had been able to do it in Japanese. And in my mind, I made a lot of bloopers. (laugh)
Han: I made a lot of bloopers in my mind too. (laugh) So it didn't seem as awkward when I was actually acting out the lines but there are some parts are a bit corny now that I look back on them. (laugh)

Q: Director Lee, the imagery you had shown us so far in your previous works, shone again in "Postman". Is there anything you payed close attention to in particular?
Lee: Japanese people have dealt a lot with the topics such as life and death and love stories between the living and the dead in their movies. But Korean people aren't used to the genre so I had to change some of the script after consulting with the writer. And I because of those parts which may seem awkward to the Korean audience, I felt that it should be more attractive in terms of imagery compared to any other film and got together the best staff in broadcasting, filming and television commercials. I had the TV commercial team work on the filming and lights, the broadcasting team on the editing and producing and the movie staff on the art while paying a lot of attention to mise-en-scene or images. There are parts where the film may seem Japanese but the younger generation these days seem to take in such props, designs and colors quite naturally. I wanted to bring this out as best as I could.

Q: Was there any pressure in having to act with Hero who is a newcomer?
Han: It's true that I was very pressured but it gradually lessened and had completely disappeared by the time we were done shooting. I actually had fun while in shoot because Hero's staff and fans were very considerate towards me. As his acting partner, I would have to say he very quick. His reactions toward my acting was very good and he adjusted pretty quickly so I think he has much potential for the future.

Q: Are you considering to continue to act? And you're currently in a dispute with your agency SM Entertainment over your contract so we are wondering if you plan to continuing to use the name they gave you -- Hero Jaejoong?
Hero: I'm not the one who put the name "Hero Jaejoong" in the poster so I'm not so sure about that part. (laugh) And I can't tell you as of now, whether I'll continue acting or not but I think it would be most right to say, like I have been saying since my debut, that I will try my best if given the opportunity.

Q: What is a new sort of joy you felt while acting, different from going up on stage to give performances like you have been doing so for the past several years?
Hero: They joy I feel on stage performing versus acting are very different but it took me a long time to catch what it was. The director had actually told me many times to think of acting the same as going up on stage to put on a performance. And he took singer Rain as an example, saying he had become a better performer on stage after taking on acting.

Q: What advice did you receive from other members of your group, including U-Know Yunho who recently starred in MBC TV series "No Limit"? Or since you had actually filmed your movie before U-Know went into shoot, had you given him any advice?
Hero: They didn't give me any advice. (laugh) We were all extremely busy back when I was filming "Postman" because we were promoting our fourth album. We also had concerts so everyone was exhausted but U-Know and Max Changmin showed a lot of interest in the atmosphere on set and told me to work hard. And U-Know is such a hard-worker that I wasn't in a position to give him advice on acting. He never even tells us when he's having a hard time or he is sick so I just watched how he did, believing he would do well.

10: Would you like to say a word to your fans who are worried over the legal dispute?
Hero: It was actually hard for me even having to show up publicly during such times. But I thought that I really should attend this screening event. I had a very hard time while we were in shoot for this a year ago but I was also very happy during that time and became very close to the director, actors and staff. I myself had been looking forward to its release for the past year so I am in hard times but I thought that I should turn up to congratulate the film. I know a lot of fans must be worried but I hope this movie can be reassurance to their hearts at least a bit.

[NEWS] The Good, the Bad and the Sexy

of Lady Kpop Rappers.

We see them in almost every recent K-pop group- a rapper, or sometimes two. They’ve spilled over from the hip-hop and urban scenes to pop, and their popularity and success are a sign that they are here to stay. Recent MVs and performances have led me to give everyone examples of the good, the bad, and the sexy of the lady Kpop rapper scene.

The Good

CL, from 2NE1, is skilled. Since their debut performance, 2NE1 has been a ubiquitous part of the k-pop scene first with Fire and later with I Don’t Care.” I was in Korea this past summer, and I swear to you, I couldn’t walk down the street without hearing one of their songs blasting from a shop on the street. I’ve always been really impressed with their whole attitude and appearance because they simply do it right. From singing to dancing to rapping, these girls have got it down.

CL is especially impressive because she has the skills a rapper needs.

- Attitude: Watching her in I Don’t Care, I feel like I’m about to get punched by a bully the whole time. She smirks, she does that head nod thing, and you know that you better pay attention to whatever she’s got to say to you. The whole way that she carries herself screams “Look at me, I’m better than you,” and we love it.

- Dance: Her live performances are a testament to her dancing abilities, whether she’s bobbing around in Lollipop, or giving a chair a lap dance at her debut concert.

- Flow: Every rapper has to have a sense of flow. Nobody wants to listen to someone stand up on stage and mutter and stammer, and CL doesn’t come close to that- she’s got flow, she’s got skills.

Overall, CL is exactly what a good rapper needs to be. She’s not perfect, though. Her style is a little out there, and whoever dresses her seems to enjoy making her look ugly, which naturally, she isn’t. Overall, though, it fits her attitude, and she manages to pull it off… most of the time.

The Bad

Recently, F(x) has been everywhere– “Chu~? and it’s performances are popping all over the place, and I’m already a little tired of it. I’m not a big fan of F(x) to begin with, but I did think their version of Chocolate Love” was decent. Unfortunately, I watched the MV and a live performance of Chu~?, and I couldn’t stop myself from remembering how rap can go oh-so-wrong. Amber is what’d I call the bad.

- She’s got no flow. When she raps, she awkwardly squeezes every word out like it’s playdough, it’s halting and it just makes me want to give her the Korean version of hooked-on-phonics. It’s like she learned how to rap from Gollum.

- She can dance pretty well, but it doesn’t match at all with the image she’s supposed to be portraying. She is a little weird-looking, which can work real well, but then she’s doing all these cutesy dances, and it just doesn’t fit well at all.

- She just doesn’t have the attitude. Watching her in Chu~?,” I couldn’t help but think that she was like a 14 year-old kid trying to smoke with the seniors in high school- working so hard to be something that she obviously isn’t. Being a bad ass is hard to pull off, and Amber just falls flat here.

I don’t think she’s unskilled- she needs to polish up her act, and come back with a better idea of what she wants her image to be, and then stick with it. Unfortunately, I can’t help but label her, for now, the bad.

The Sexy

When it comes to most music, I’m typically more of an indie fan, and so I tend to want to avoid mainstream stuff too much, and usually don’t listen to the really popular stuff until about 2 months after it’s been replaced as the most popular. I did it with 2NE1’s “Lollipop,” and regretted it, and then I did it again with Abracabra,” and could kick myself for it. When I first laid my eyes on the Brown Eyed Girls, I was a little shocked, kinda weirded out, and incredibly impressed. What kind of mad-man puts a murder scene, drugs, faux-lesbian hotness, and a hot-hips dance all in the same music video? Well, BEG does, and they pull it off like the beasts that they are. Their rapper Miryo blew me out of the water, and showed me for the first time that quality rap really can exist in Kpop.

  • This chick is a bad ass in every way. In Abracadabra,” the woman calls herself a Kaiser and then shakes a stick at you while wearing shoulder pads and looking like M. Bison. In another video (”How come?”), she yells at a man and waves a gun at him, commanding him “tell me you love me.” Well, Miryo, I love you.
  • -She’s got style. In every MV, Miyro is a strange mix of masculine and feminine, pulling together a sometimes androgynous but always sexy look.
  • -She can dance. Did you SEE Abracadabra?
  • -Flow? This chick is slick as oil. She never stutters, never stammers, and never trips up- well, at least with her voice (stairs weren’t at rapper school). Even live, her rapping is always flawless, and whoever writes the music for BEG really seems to understand how to write for Miryo. Unlike a lot of rap in kpop, Miryo’s pieces add to the songs, and are essential to them. They’re not just a bridge, but especially in Sign,” she’s able to be an integral part of the their group without overbearing and without underbearing.

Miryo is the queen of the Lady KPop Rappers, and hell yeah, she is sexy.

There you have it– the good, the bad, and the sexy of Lady KPop rappers. What do you think makes a good rapper?

[News] Comeback D-1. Can 2pm, Who will come back in next day, Retake the "beast-idol syndrome"?

Asia.co.kr: 2pm will come back with the title song of their first album, "Heartbeat" on 10th Nov. The first stage of it will be a Music Bank of KBS. At last, 2pm, who had many ups and downs, will come back into K-pop culture.

We expect that 2pm willmake a lot of issues. there is always a open question, when Jay will come back? and they can rise to the top cuz there are no Dong-Bang-Shin-Ki and Bing Bang in 2009 K-pop. More, Park, jin young said about the title song, "Hear beat", - 'This is a totally new song", so We hope to see good results.

#1. Who will replace Jay?
2PM will be a unique team which come back in very short time after his leader's resignation. The leader played a pivotal role in 2PM. So, if there is no leader, there should be a big change in members, but, 2pm has no idea to change something till now.

JYPE said, "we did not pick up new leader, and 6 members will help one another and do 2pm' work."

The issue around Jay will be a good point that 2pm will be a sensitive issue. But also, it will be a bad effect not to focus their music only. So Jay will be a tension point of 2PM.

What means "totally new music"?
Apart from Jay, the new song of 2pm will be very creative, so can arouse a passionate response. Park Jin Young said already, "this is a totally new song which you cannot imagine", and expressed a strong confidence.

The keyword of this music is "Heart". In this new teaser movie, they used the members' real heart beat sound, and expressed their image as "heated heartbeat"

This song may not be included an usual music genre. JYPE said, "this song is a totally new concept song"

Can 2pm retake a status as "beast-idol"?
2PM was faced with an ordeal, "Leader Jay's resignation" just before they could rise to the top in 2009. So, can 2pm retake its status as top idol? This is a kinda main interest of people.

Especially, the beast idol syndrome, focusing 2pm, aroused big interests of women(in their 20's), and replaced Dong-Bang-Shin-Ki and Bing Bang in K-pop world. And the member's honesty attracted many people they can shoot many variety shows and commercials.

But when 2pm had a rest, new male idol groups made debut. B2st of Cube Entertainment (4 minutes' agency) made its debut and their concept was also beast, and Mblaq of J-tune (Rain's) Entertainment also took its concept as masculinity and showed an acrobatic dance. They shared beast idol concept with 2pm.

Actually, the first step goes well. The songs released beforehand, “tired of waiting" and "i was crazy for you" got a good response. JYPE said, "The song released beforehand ranked high in music chart, we expect the title song can get a better response"

Read this with a pinch of salt. This is basically the reporters point of view and you know how they like to twist it and make the article even more interesting. To me 2PM doesnt need to retake the beastly status as they are the first. No offense, but groups like MBLAQ & BEAST who are following the beastly concept would not be able to defeat 2PM's as they are the first one who started it.Do not get me wrong,I am a fan of MBLAQ and BEAST as well, but they just debuted and have much more to learn.

[NEWS] 2PM 'Heartbeat' Song-Marketing-Jaebum 'Dae Bak formula'

The title song 'Heartbeat' in 2PM's first official album '01:59PM', is garnering immense popularity as soon as it was released on the 10th. It had placed 1st in various music charts and is staying on as one of the top searched terms in various portal sites.

2PM's new song, 'Heartbeat' comes after their debut song '10 out of 10', 'Again and Again' and 'I hate you'. The song embodies a powerful yet dark and wistful sentiment -- the color of 2PM is well captured. 'Heartbeat' is written and composed by Park Jin Young. It uses the actual heart beat sounds of the 6 members as the base and an orchestra is arranged over the sound creating a sad, doleful melody that captures the melancholy sentiment.

As much work has been put into the song, they have put in a lot of effort into the marketing as well. As they have gained a lot of attention through the '01:59PM' 'Tired of waiting' 'I was crazy for you' as well as the teaser marketing, they have completed the image marketing with the connection between 'Heartbeat', the idea of 'waiting' and the actual pulse of the heart. Anxiety, fear, yearning and various other meanings have been attached to the song 'Heartbeat' and has been coupled with the sound of the actual pulse creating an image sound for this whole album's concept.

The peak of 2PM's marketing is 'Jaebum' who had left the team in September after the anti-Korea controversy. The song, which is more sorrowful than before, is used along with the idea of fear and anxiety as a theme. This marketing point is combined into one with 'Leader Jaebum's absence' and the fans' desire for his return.

The result of many fans discussing how the album's title, '01:59PM' has been used to call 2PM without Jaebum, along with how the songs, 'Tired of Waiting' and 'I was crazy for you' seems to reflect the 6 members' and Jaebum's thoughts are all a result of how the marketing point has hit its mark.

Although fans are worried that they are using Jaebum too much for just marketing, many in the music industry see it as a way of telling the story of the whole album, especially after the talk of Jaebum's return possibly becoming a reality.
